Hundreds of homes in the coastal Los Angeles suburb of Rancho Palos Verdes have lost power due to a slow landslide that has resulted in several houses being deemed unsafe for occupancy.

NBC Los Angeles reported:

Power was shut off to an additional 105 homes Monday night due to accelerating landslides in a Rancho Palos Verdes neighborhood.

The latest round of shutoffs occurred at 7 p.m. Monday in the Seaview area of the Los Angeles County seaside community overlooking the Pacific. On Sunday, power was shut off in 140 homes in the Portuguese Bend area. Those residents also remain under an evacuation warning.

Land movement in Ranchos Palos Verdes has increased across 680 acres following rains in spring 2023. The accelerating slides have buckled roads and damaged homes and utilities.

On Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Gavin Newsom

Not new. The area has been sliding into the sea for decades, at least. Just a little faster lately due to heavy rains.

“Not new. The area has been sliding into the sea for decades, at least. Just a little faster lately due to heavy rains.”

I used to go there decades ago - it’s like a mud glacier. I remember they would always be building the replacement parallel road up the ‘glacier’ as they knew the active road would slide down and be destroyed in the process, as the mud doesn’t slide evenly down the hill.

One would have to get their head examined for living there, but it is a very nice area, otherwise.

I expected California to slide into the sea a lot faster. This piecemeal thing is frustrating.

Now, if the whole state would quickly slide into the ocean!

Well, I can dream, can’t I? ;-)

They need to RENAME Portuguese Bend to 'MARINELAND", lol

Also, another GREAT idea: Build a few skyscraper apartments there and FILL THEM WITH ILLEGALS.

Looks like it’s around where Marineland used to be. Lot’s of sport parachutes in the area catching the updrafts. Nice area, expensive homes.

I just learned that WAYFARER'S CHAPEL has been deconstructed. They have removed all the beautiful custom glass panes for rebuilding someplace else that is stable.

Frank Lloyd Wright is rolling in his grave.

Yep, speaking of “nothing new” here, that ANCIENT landslide has been ongoing (off and on) for many, many centuries. I do feel sorry for the affected homeowners.

All the liberals here have orders to move to Texas to turn the state blue.

Be careful what you wish for.

It may happen before you know it.

If any part of Texas was as nice as California they'd already be there.

I heard a radio news report today that the land is moving about 1 foot per week.

One recent discovery is that there are two slides on top of each other. One is about 165 feet below the surface, and one at about 300 feet down. (
The highest elevation on the Peninsula is about 1000 feet.)

The problem nowadays with what is left of the “Nice” areas around S.CA, is they’ve been steadily shrinking and becoming completely surrounded by the expanding zombie zones and bad areas. The people in PV have to go into some really lousy areas every time when they go down the hill...Places like Wilmington, Harbor City and N.Long Beach are right there. Senseless murder districts.

And increasingly those in places like PV are becoming targets in their own “Nice” areas around the LA area, as those in the zombie zones are embolden and just go up the hill to get what they have.

Interesting article. I’ve never advocating locating ones residence too near a body of water or river, and exactly for the reasons that are playing out there in CA. I hope everyone gets out safely.

Sucks, but at a personal level it’s not very smart to stay put in a red city, in a red county, in a red state, in a red country when you have options. I’m not suggesting people leave the US (yet), but at least try to get out of your red county if you can...but not always easy.
