Tropical Storm watches and warnings have been issued from the Florida Keys up the Florida Gulf Coast to Suwanee. The system is crossing Central Cuba, moving at 16mph. The disturbance is expected to develop into a tropical depression on Saturday as it moves across the Straits of Florida, followed by intensification into a tropical storm by Saturday night. Governor DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 54 counties, most along the Gulf Coast and in northern Florida, to move assets in preparation for the storm.
August 13 marks 20 years since Hurricane Charley made landfall near Punta Gorda FL.
The rapid strengthening of Charley in the eastern Gulf of Mexico caught many by surprise. Around five hours before its Florida landfall, Charley was a strong Category 2 hurricane predicted to strengthen its strongest winds to 115 mph upon its landfall in the Tampa–Saint Petersburg area. About two hours before landfall, the National Hurricane Center issued a special advisory, notifying the public that Charley had become a 145 mph Category 4 hurricane, with a predicted landfall location in the Port Charlotte area. As a result of this change in forecast, numerous people in the Charlotte County area were unprepared for the hurricane, although the new track prediction was well within the previous forecast's margin of error. National Hurricane Center forecasting intern Robbie Berg publicly blamed the media for misleading residents into believing that a Tampa landfall was inevitable.

Big storm with widespread effects. The Atlantic coast has been getting feeder bands with tornadoes for 24 hours. We should continue getting the storm’s tail through tomorrow.

Downtown hear island temps run 4-5 F higher than sunburb temps too. ;-)

Depends on how far from the shore you are and the strength of the hurricane. If you’re 10’ elevation and 50 miles from the coast ? You’re probably ok. If you’re less than 5-10 miles from the coast, the strength, angle of approach and tide schedule all come into play. Anything above a Cat 2 storm? Yea. You could definitely be in danger. Even a Cat 2 could be a problem if it’s a direct hit at high tide.
If there is any real chance that storm surge can hit where you live? It’s better to be somewhere else!

Good grief, we’re not getting anything like that. It’s stopped raining for now- it’s breezy and there’s a tornado watch but I believe we’re through the heaviest of Ditzy Debby.
Really- it was no more than one of our crazy Florida summer rains, just lasted longer.

Debby was going through quite a strengthening process as it traveled by offshore. Like growing pains, Debby was awfully cranky. Will remember this one.
Debby’s eye very prominent on radar now.

If you go to www.flightradar24.com, there are two planes going through Debby now an Air Force c-130 out of (presumably) Kessler AFB and an NOAA plane (type unknown) out of Lakeland Fl.
Yikes, there are still commercial flights going in and out of Tampa Intl Airport.
I’d hate to be on one of those flights! White Knuckle Experience!
Good grief. Now under tornado warning until 10:00 and flood warning extended to after midnight. No rest for the weary.

I had my Spectrum internet, phone and tv went out here in central Fla. since 1pm and just got it back on at 10:30 pm. The weather here has been calm with only a few rainbands but they said severe weather has damaged equipment and they have to wait until it is safe to repair it. I have yet to get a confirmation it is repaired so I am unsure if it will go back down. Thanks for the thread and all the updates. We have a tornado watch here until 6 am.
Debby’s officially a hurricane. Pressure dropped to 985.
