Bolton says Middle East already in ‘wider war’ after Iran, Lebanon attacks
The Hill ^ | 08/01/2024 | Miranda Nazzaro

Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton on Thursday argued the Middle East is already in the middle of a “wider war” as concerns grow about an escalating conflict following the apparent assassination of a top Hamas political leader in Tehran this week.

Bolton argued the larger regional conflict began after Oct. 7, when the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise assault on southern Israel, where they killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 250 others.

“We’re not dealing with conflict in Gaza or the conflict with Hezbollah and North Lebanon or a conflict with the Houthis closing the Red Sea or a conflict in Iraq with Shia militia,” Bolton said Thursday on NewsNation. “This is all an Iranian ‘ring of fire strategy’ — that’s the Iranian name for it.”

“It’s been going on since at least Oct. 7, so we’ve been in a wider war since then, and unless the U.S. understands that directly, we’re going to be worse than useless in trying to deal with what the real threat is here,” Bolton said. “The real threat is the regime in Tehran.”

"Somebody has a war boner"

I was going to say he's probably already creamed his jeans over that.

Bolton’s war boner has grown enough that it is messing up his mustache.

No one has yet pointed this out, but the reason there is so much tension in the Middle East is because of their diets that result in painful constipation.

They all need to get with Bolton and have some oatmeal together. That will open up their colons, relieve the pressure, and lead to peace in the Middle East.

“The real threat is the regime in Tehran.” …
That is true, but turning against Presidents that keep that regime powerless and in check (and most likely working to make them fall) is not the way to stop them, Mr. Goo-goo-g’joob.

Not our problem. Our war is here.

No fan of Bolton, but he is right about the “wider war.” The sooner Tehran Joe, Obama, and Kamala wake up and realize that fact and quit trying to rein in Israel, the better the world will be.

Cant be ignored though. You could say the same thing about the guys that pulled off 911. And they weren’t on the verge of a developing a nuke capability.

People here speak about the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs in apocalyptic terms all the time.

Now, I do not dispute for a second that a 100 kT strike on a US city would not suck. It would kill a lot of our people, it would create environmental damage that would be hard to mitigate, and it would cost a lot of money.

It also would kill their leaders and end the North Korean or Iranian state.

It’s curious that more people are not wound up about the Russian or Chinese nuclear weapons, because there are lots of them, and an exchange with the US could end life at least in the Northern Hemisphere if not, eventually, all over.

Going to war with Iran seems to me to be a singularly bad idea after the failure of much more plausible campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Well, two points...

It’s curious that more people are not wound up about the Russian or Chinese nuclear weapons

Thats because Russia and China fall into what we call rationale actors. They are 'allowed' to co-exist with us with a nuclear arsenal because they, like us, care about their own survival. They know that nuclear weapons since WWII (when we were the only nation to achieve them) are only tolerable under a concept of deterrence. Once employed, all bets are off.

Islamic nations do not necessarily pass this 'rationale' test. If the Islamic Imam's want the holy war and the return of the 12th Imam, then they would be more likely to use nuclear weapons without regard for consequences.

Going to war with Iran seems to me to be a singularly bad idea...

I didnt see Bolton advocating going to war, yet. And there are ways to address threats, both militarily and otherwise, without going to all out war. We do that on a regular basis. Though the rationale for it makes a lot more sense when grown ups are in charge.

“then they would be more likely to use nuclear weapons without regard for consequences”

I’m not sure we have an accurate view of the Islamic Republic, but for the sake of discussion, OK, let’s say they are not concerned with consequences and test their first nuclear weapon in Upper New York Bay. Please ignore the probability that the target is Tel Aviv, again, for the sake of discussion.

My point was, OK, they hit us and they hurt us bad. What then? It would be a one-time thing, and it would be the last thing they did, ever.

The last thing Israel needs is a wider war.

The Israelis need to focus in on Gaza and threats in the immediate area, not get into a war with Iran.
