J. D. Vance and the Emerging Counter-Elite
City Journal ^ | 7/25/24 | Christopher Rufo

Posted on 07/26/2024 2:51:24 PM PDT by CFW

Former president Donald Trump’s selection of Ohio senator J. D. Vance as his running mate has generated much commentary. The mainstream media has tried to frame Vance as a postliberal “threat to democracy,” while Trump’s supporters have celebrated him as a bridge to a new generation.

But there is a deeper story here. The Vance selection is not a gambit to secure a particular demographic or region—white men are Trump’s base; Ohio is a safe red state—but an effort to cultivate an emerging counter-elite that could make the second Trump administration substantially more effective than the first.

This story is built into J. D. Vance’s biographical arc. He was the all-American kid who rose from humble beginnings to make his way in the world: the Marines; Yale Law; venture capital; a best-selling book. He learned the language of the prestige institutions, cultivated powerful patrons, and quickly climbed the ladder in academia, finance, and business. He had made it.

Then, his story takes a turn. Having entered the ranks of America’s elite, Vance became disillusioned and disenchanted with it, correctly identifying it as a force of hypocrisy and corruption. He defected—first, by parting ways with the respectable conservatism of the Beltway, and then by embracing Donald Trump.

Some have criticized this as a cynical move, but my sense is that it is the opposite. A cynic would have continued to build an elite résumé; Vance sacrificed his respectability within a certain stratum, assumed considerable risk by moving toward Trump, and, in my view, was genuinely convinced that the establishment, both Left and Right, had exhausted itself and had to be opposed.

Now, not only has Vance been selected as a vice-presidential nominee; more significantly, he has charted the path for an emerging new conservative counter-elite.

At this point, it's not time to be meek and look for middle ground. We have a country to save and the only way to do that is to be bold, strong, and stand up for our conservative values. The GOPe has forced us to surrender our principles for too long in the name of "working across the aisle" and "spirit of compromise". I like J.D. Vance as a VP choice.

Voters want a safe country. They want low crime. People want a secure border and they don't want to worry their child will be killed by drugs or illegal aliens. Voters want to be able to afford groceries and not worry if putting food on the table means something else goes unpaid.

We have had the Democrats for 3 1/2 years and it has been a disaster. Forget what the media says, voters don't appreciate having been lied to and told Biden was fine only to have the truth come and and Harris being inserted as the Democrat nominee without their say.

Ignore the fake polls. Trump/Vance is winning.

No matter who President Trump picked, they were going to get savaged. Senator JD Vance is no exception, seems like he's handling it well. He's a good choice, hopefully he fits Trump's strategic considerations, which I suspect are the rust belt and midwest--Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, etc.

He'll be in Reno next Tuesday, I'll be going and will be curious to see the crowd and his evolving stump speech.

This makes no sense at all.

He’s been under Thiel’s wing since law school, and Thiel funded (along with Google’s Eric Schmidt and other SV titans) his VC firm and Senate campaign.

Thiel, of course, is as Establishment as they come, heading up the steering committee of Bilderberg, and I longtime Trump supporter.

America needs Trump or US will go down the shitter!
The Regime cheat MUST be covered. Trump needs every vote he can get because he’s going to be running against the Regime media diatribe, their imported illegal aliens and the dead.
Vance had had better prove that he deserves the VP spot by pulling in his own votes. So far, all he has done is piss off a bunch of women. Trump doesn’t need any liabilities.

“No matter who President Trump picked, they were going to get savaged.”

Exactly! They have been worse against Trump than they were past GOP nominees, but that’s because he didn’t fold at the first signs of criticism as those such as Romney did. It has shocked the Democrats that their usual tactics have not worked against Trump.

Remember the articles and protests against Bush? Remember the hate against Pence? Now they practically hold up them, Romney, and Liz Cheney as the “right” kind of Republicans. How quickly people forget.

Vance’s controversial cat lady comment came when speaking to Tucker Carlson on Fox in July 2021. He needs to acknowledge he made a mistake and reassure the public that he has grown in his sensitivity to all people. That could also come from his wife, Usha, who has received irrational far-right attacks for her Indian ancestry. This is a time to heal the discord and division in our society.

My 0.02 on Vance as VP candidate:

On the plus side, we could not ask for a better pro-life champion. Vance is against abortion even in cases of incest and rape.

Vance’s youth is also a plus for those who are concerned about Trump’s age. If Vance can connect to young voters and make inroads on another traditionally left leaning demographic as Trump has done with black and Hispanic voters, so much the better.

On the other hand, Vance has said some pretty weird stuff. For instance, when asked to clarify his stance on abortion he said, “we want women and young boys in the womb to have the right to life.” What about young girls in the womb? Was that just a gaffe or is he okay with sex-selective abortions, as in his wife’s home country?

Overall I give him a B+ as a candidate.

Thiel is a longtime Trump supporter. Major donor in 2016 race.

He did not make a mistake and he should say no such thing.

He explained at the time that it was not an attack on people who were childless for any reason but an examination of the fact that most of the left leaders have no children and that results in a different culture. Aparently within a few days Buttigeg adopted and it was pointed out that Kamala was a stepmother. That was when he clarified.

I think you should examine your apologize plan. Explanations are OK, when people have not gotten what you meant but apologies are like chum in the water for sharks; the sharks just attack more viciously.

I only watched 30 seconds of CNN with the bottom banner saying More Women React. Condemn JD Vance Remarks On Childless Women.

Like with Dan Quayle, the Left is holding Vance’s arms and beating him with brass knuckles.

What did we expect?

Right. That was my point. He has been Vance’s main sponsor for a decade. So this story lacks credibility.

When democRATS speak (lie) about something changing, they call it ‘evolving.’

They will say ANYTHING during primaries and elections, and then explain the lies by lying some more.

When President Trump instituted most of his campaign promises, the Drive-By Media just freaked out. Oh! The Humanity of doing what he said he would do!

“No matter who President Trump picked, they were going to get savaged.”

It goes with the game, like Dan Quayle and Sarah Palin.
