Embattled Secret Service head Kimberly Cheatle has revealed the fateful reason why her agency failed to position an agent on top of the building that a gunman used to carry out an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Cheatle, who is already facing calls to resign over what some lawmakers are calling a massive security failure, said Secret Service officials planning security for Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania considered the warehouse about 150 yards away from where Trump spoke to be a risky position for stationing an agent.
'That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there's a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn't want to put somebody up on a sloped roof,' she told ABC News in an interview Tuesday.
'And so, you know, the decision was made to secure the building, from inside.'
What transpired instead was a security nightmare: Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to scale the building and secure his own position, while law enforcement struggled to locate him even amid pressing warnings from members of the Trump crowd. But there wasn't sufficient time to act on the tips, she explalined.
'The shooter was actually identified as a potential person of suspicion,' Cheatle said. 'Unfortunately, with the rapid succession of how things unfolded, by the time that individual was eventually located, they were on the rooftop and were able to fire off at the former president.'

Where was Crooks’ car and how many times did he go back to it to get something more? When did he bring his rifle? And HOW did he bring his rifle, when LE was supposed to be on the lookout for him? Did they have any barriers at all set up to keep people from coming in without going through the metal detectors? Was crawling over the roof of that building the way to get in with a rifle? It sure would have been helpful if the eyes that were in that building had actually been somewhere helpful...

Never underestimate the power of incompetence, but don't preemptively rule out malice. It is also powerful and common. If she won't talk for fear of losing her job, let her sit in Mike Johnson's jail. She can stay there until the end of the term. After which time it increasingly looks like the Justice department will be on the other side, eager to charge anyone guilty and likely to beat any coverup these clowns may try. Depending on what the evidence shows she might criminally responsible for one count or murder and one count of attempted murder of a former president. IIRC the latter carries a Federal Death penalty. Obstructive witnesses should be told we will investigate fairly and provide due process. But that if the facts go there so will we. They may believe they can steal the election and escape justice. But right now it's not looking good for them and a Biden win would be widely suspicious. The more guilty they act the more voters will turn on them. There has to be some level of fraud they can't cross without even their own partisans recognizing it's a coup, not an election. Alas some of their partisans would accept that, but I'd bet for many that's a bridge too far. They must consider the possibility Trump wins and if so would they have rather have cooperated now.
In the video it shows woman with phone after shooting. Then it shows an empty seat where she was sitting. Where did she go?
