Former president Donald Trump’s ambition of remaking the Republican Party in his image just took a major leap forward with the selection of Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, a Catholic convert, as his vice-presidential nominee.
...News of Trump’s choice prompted a range of reactions from Catholic observers.
In response to the pick, Elbridge Colby, the Catholic former deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy and force development, posted his jubilation on X: “An absolutely superb, visionary choice by President Trump of @JDVance1. America could not be more fortunate. We are finally primed for putting Americans first again — for real! It can’t come soon enough.”
According to Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, Vance’s greatest attribute is his deep commitment to the Catholic faith.
“Vance is an extremely serious Roman Catholic,” Roberts told the Register. “That should excite Catholics and other people of faith. Of all the things that strike me about his attributes, his authenticity is at the top of the list. The vast majority of Americans will really come to love him and his family.”
...“He is young, intelligent and keen on policies that help working-class families,” said Brownback, a Republican and a former Kansas governor and U.S. senator, by text. “He will be a big help in winning the industrial states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan. The old Democrat ‘Blue Wall’ is gone.”
Vance’s youth is also thought to be a potential benefit for a Trump campaign seeking to capitalize on recent polling that shows an uptick in support for Trump among voters between the ages of 18 and 29. A recent New York Times/Siena poll found Trump leading this cohort by 8 points

was saying in another thread, it’s better to be young and malleable than beholden to fixed special interests. doesn’t negate the consistency of his core values.
American Catholicism, not traditional Catholicism, has become one with the world. So, my interpretation of what the article is saying is that Trump’s choice is a move away from Catholic socialism.
Vance as VP..
What it shows.. Vance has supported Trump.
Trump honored Vance’s loyalty
I’m loving this article. His positions as moderated conservatism are perfect for the midwest. He’s in all the right places to bring manufacturing jobs back to this country, as well as to be acceptable to people who aren’t extreme in either direction, while still being philosophically to the right. Excellent choice that I can really get behind.
Elbridge Colby and Vance are both Yale JD’s.
Is his wife also Catholic, or Hindu?
The midwest needs rejuvenating.
His wife is Hindu.
Seems that she is still Hindu. He married her before he became a Catholic.
So she belongs to an ancient indo-aryan tradition that currently fights back against radical islam, sounds good to me
JD Vance’s wife, Usha, comes from an impressive Indian background.
Too many Catholics have adopted the poisonous views of the Rats that have infected the Church. Hopefully Vance will prove to be a positive influence in this regard.
Hindu. How letting in more Indians helps the middle class...
How influential do you think a typical VP can be? It’s all eyes on Trump, and rightly so.
“His wife is Hindu”
So is my dentist, and she’s damned good one too. It’s like she has six hands and they each hold a different instrument.
Sounds like Trump wisely chose somebody who isn’t a neocon war pig, in case the next “random” assassin gets luckier. Assuming Trump wins, now all he has to do is prevent rogue generals from getting this country into the Ukraine war.
I've seen the Hindu pictures...
I don’t consider MAGA ‘traditional’ in any way.
