After decades of becoming increasingly rare, the military draft is back in the debate.
Israel—which has long had mandatory conscription—is currently debating whether or not to lengthen its service for reservists as a result of its ongoing war against Hamas and Hezbollah, and it may soon expand the draft to the currently exempted ultra-Orthodox population following an Israeli Supreme Court ruling voiding the exemption last month. In May, Ukraine expanded its draft in order to replenish its forces as it continues to fight off the Russian invasion. Russia has similarly broadened its compulsory military service in response to mounting casualties in Ukraine. In the Baltic states, Latvia reintroduced the draft in 2023 following Russia’s attack on Ukraine; Lithuania reintroduced it in 2015 in response to Russia’s 2014 invasion of Ukraine; Estonia never abolished it. And halfway across the world, Taiwan recently lengthened its conscription period in response to increasingly menacing threats from China.

The main problem with no draft is that there is no depth of reserves: if your current armed forces are used up, you're screwed because you have no body of trained reserves to call on to replace them.
Si vis pacem, para bellum.
That's been true for 2000 years. I first heard it from my grandmother, after she described what it was like to throw as much as they could into some horse drawn wagons as the sound of German artillery came closer and closer in the Fall of 1914.
Americans have never known anything like that since the Civil War. That's why a forward defense is a good idea.
A common, Judeo-Christian culture raised in a Capitalist society that was taught basic Civics. And even if the hippies of the latter generation were rebelling against parts of it, they at least understood it and embraced much of the rest.
So what? It does that periodically. Fueled by lying stories like this. Like I said this mimeographed “story” shows up about once a year. And it’s always BS, and I always come onto the subsequent FR thread and point out that it’s BS, and people always say “but but but” and the draft hasn’t been re-instituted yet.
It’s BS. Every time. Including this one. And when see another version of this story next year. And next and next and next.
Does that include the 18,000 draftees who came home in a box?
Why are only those 18-25 year old males given the honor to
be selected for military service of their country?
The draft should be inclusive, all men and women 18-82 should be eligible.
I give you McNamara's Morons
“send their children”
Ha! Not a good phrase..
Which is true, and important, but also the military has been dealing with this for centuries and their number one important thing is to get the teen age and young men into their hands, and they can work with those kids over the first 6 months to get them grown up and trained and shifting gears.
A punk 19 year old doesn’t know his own mind and isn’t fixed forever, Marine drill sergeants, a sense of pride and accomplishment and a larger vision of the world and his role in it as a real man can change his views from what it was when he was smoking a doobie with his girlfriend and putting down “the man” and his bourgeois draft.
We have had at least one Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who was a draftee.
“General Shali” was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1993 to 1997.
I kind of like the way the Ukes are doing it. I think the average age is 43. That’s the generation that should have taken steps to ensure the war never started. I think in Vietnam the average age at death for Americans was 21. One of my best friends at the time was killed at 18.
You might as well say: "THE RETURN OF THE CIVIL WAR" because it will be about 5 generations against one. We're not fighting to protect the deep state, the rainbow jihad, groomers, child sacrificers, bloodthirsty pharma and defense corporations, psychotic bug munching billionaires, covid lockdowns, climate religions, open borders, inflating fed freaks, senile polititions or new world orders.
In 1972 when I turned 18 my draft number came up: 27. President Nixon did us all a favor by curtailing the draft and coincidentally, Governor Curtis of the State of Maine lowered the drinking age to 18. A good double whammy for sure!
Where did you get that figure?
And didn’t want it reinstated. He was in during Viet Nam and saw how messy the military gets when it’s made up of a lot of people that really don’t want to be there.
I agree it’s not coming back.
Then any of the younger people who are fat, drunk and stupid will be in trouble.

For our Vietnam War dead the average age was 23.1
Why not? That's how an awful lot of parents view it. Hell, I talked my son out of joining Air Force ROTC.
I think they all say that for political reasons, I was in during Vietnam also and I think our old sergeants and combat units and Airborne, Marine, and Special Operations units would love to have that manpower pool over what they are having to use to fill and underfill our volunteer ranks with.
Our military is becoming more technological advanced. Drones are becoming huge now. So it'll take more skills.
That’s the generation that should have taken steps to ensure the war never started.
A 43 years old Ukrainian soldier was born when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. So how is it his fault?
