Putin's war of attrition is coming at a massive cost, with 5,000 soldiers killed or injured in the battle for one neighborhood

Havrylyuk said that people were seen as expendable by Putin in his mission to conquer Ukraine, but economic issues and problems supplying its troops with ammunition and equipment could soon blunt its campaign.

The ISW said that high casualties were part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's strategy to grind out a victory in Ukraine through a war of attrition.

"The recent increase in reports of entire Russian units becoming combat ineffective due to losses highlights the tactics on which Russian forces are relying on to pursue Putin's theory of a slow, gradual, grinding victory in Ukraine," it said.

Vladimir Putin is seeking to grind out a victory in Ukraine. But its coming at a massive cost in casualties. A Ukrainian officer said Russia lost 5,000 troops in battles for a district. Russia's war of attrition in Ukraine is coming at a huge cost in killed and injured troops, with a Ukrainian official claiming Russia suffered 5,000 casualties in battles for one neighborhood alone.

Ukrainian defense official Lieutenant General Ivan Havrylyuk, in an essay published in Ukrainian outlet NV on July 9, discussed the possibility of a new Ukrainian counteroffensive to drive back Russian forces occupying territory in the south and east of Ukraine.

In the article, Havrylyuk claimed that Russia would likely have trouble sustaining the initiative in the conflict using its manpower and equipment advantages. Havrylyuk pointed to massive Russian casualties he said its military was sustaining, claiming that 5,000 Russian troops were killed or injured in battles for control of a single district in the strategically vital town of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk, east Ukraine.

Thanks and I admit your boy Putin looks healthy these days

Putin is not "my boy".

Tell your Biden to tell your Elensky to withdraw what's left of the Ucrazian army from the future Russian Federation oblasts of Kharkov, Nikolaev and Odessa.

Gotta be honest here, I’m loving how Ukraine is holding off a nuclear superpower 20 times its size!

With more than 500,000 KIA Ukie soldiers, It seems like Canadian grandmothers like you and American citizens enjoy different things.

Putin us too sickly to attend these confabs of world leaders. Sick, cancerous Vlad knows his health will be scrutinized. That the UK and US will send medical observers to see how well he looks. Joe Biden sustained for three days at G20.

But this is too much overloading Vlad’s circuits. He will get some Parkinson’s shakes. Plus various intelligence agencies will be taking video of his every appearance, to analyze later for Vlad’s illnesses.

Then this all gets back to the Kremlin honchos, and they send/exile Vlad to a permanent vacation, down in his extensive Sochi compound. Where his Dr Feelgoods try to cure his terminal diseases. Vlad will know that at any time he will get a Kremlin sponsored injection that will croak him.

The Ukrainians claim that Russia suffers high casualties but never back it up with evidence. They claimed the other day that Russia suffered 99,000 casualties but Russia only has 10,000 troops in the area. I'm sure that if there were 99,000 dead and injured Russians all over the battlefield it wouldn't be hard for Ukraine to send up a drone to get video footage. It's all lies. It happens every time Zelensky is set to get on his knees for the NATO clowns

Those FABs the Russians are dropping turn every one of these battles into a Stalingrad for Ukes. The Russians aren’t interested in losing large numbers in meat offensives like the Ukes are fond of. No wonder the Russian are inflicting 2000 Uke casualties each and every day.

During a conflict true numbers are hard to get. Listening to a talking head on YouTube, he is putting casualties at 35k Russians and 10x that for Ukraine. The bigger issue is infrastructure damage in Ukraine and how Russia is ramping up man and material. Sooner or later, Ukraine will be out of meat to sacrifice.

Ukrainian death toll has been reported as two to three times the Russian's which would mean over a million dead so far if true.

Which is why it isn’t true. Traditionally, the attacking forces receive greater casualties than the defenders do and this is true in Ukraine, also.

Recent counts suggest that the Russian casualties are 3x Ukraine’s, but have risen to 6x the Ukrainian casualties thanks to growing parity of artillery and other weapons and the style of attack the Russians favor that results in high Russian casualties.

The Russians have lost an astonishing number of tanks and APCs and have had to adjust to this reality, leading to even higher than usual Russian casualties. And soon, F-16s and other weapons will be joining the battle to save Ukraine from Putin and Russian losses will continue as now and will likely increase.

More to the point, as they watch history repeat itself, former Soviet countries are coming together to aid Ukraine, too. They don’t want to go back to those bad old days under the old Soviet ways as Putin clearly does want to do.

The only “win” for Putin is for him to quit killing Russians in Ukraine and go back home and stop attacking and killing his Slavic family neighbors like he is doing now.

The general consensus from unbiased sources is that the Ukrainian losses are much higher than Russian losses. Estimates range from at least a factor of two to as high as a factor of five.

Independent sources have reported Ukrainian death toll in the number of a half million people and that was a while back. Even the Ukrainian's themselves are acknowledging that so many Ukrainians have been killed that they are flat running out of soldiers to put in the fight

While it very possible that in isolated engagements the Russian have had disproportionate casualty rates, it's absurd to think that Russian overall losses have been 3 times those of the Ukraine.

Attacking forces face huge losses against well prepared and well equipped adversaries.

This has not been the case in Ukraine.

The Russians have had superiority and the Ukrainian forces have been over matched.

Western missiles and howitzers have kept the Ukrainians in the fight and have inflicted huge losses on the Russians but they have done little to minimize Ukrainian losses

A similar situation happened when the Germans invaded in WWII. They inflected much higher casualties on the Ukrainians and Russians.

That said, let's "compromise" and say that the casualty rate is even so "only" 700,000 people on both sides have been killed. This is a staggering death toll for both sides in such a senseless war.

The Ukraine just lost all hope last night after Biden's disaster of a press conference so the only remaining question is how more of the Ukraine is going to be demolished and how many more Innocent men and women on both sides are going to have to die before Biden's wag the dog proxy war is finally shut down.

This is about the only thing you wrote that I agree with and even then I only agree with half of what you said.

I think the various ground to air missile, gun and drone systems in use from the beginning until now have done an admirable job protecting Ukrainian citizens from Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians and civilian targets. And, they are getting better at it, too, though the glide bombs against the military are a significant problem yet to be dealt with.

More of these defensive systems is better, of course, and fortunately more continues to come to their defense. New weapons arriving throughout the summer should help them to defend themselves even better against Putin’s attacks and his attempt to steal their land and assimilate them, which are great reasons to never quit fighting against Putin.

Putin has killed a lot of people in Ukraine for no good reason whatsoever. If he wins, the atrocities done against Ukrainians will likely be worse than anything we’ve learned about or is rumored. These are also great reasons to never surrender to Putin.

He’s the warmonger who brought division and then war to Ukraine and Georgia, as their old playbook dictates, but I think he’ll punch himself out in Ukraine long before his opponent quits fighting for their freedom and independence.
