NASCAR debuted what it claims is the future of racing, its electric ABB NASCAR EV Prototype, at the Chicago Street Race event on Saturday, but fans were not impressed.
The vehicle was developed in partnership with Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, and electric vehicle (EV) developer ABB, all in an effort to reach NASCAR’s “sustainability” goals. One of those goals is to reach “net-zero” operating emissions in the next ten years, the racing organization said in its press release:
While NASCAR is committed to the historic role of the combustion engine in racing, it is also committed to decarbonizing its operations and reducing its own carbon footprint to zero across its core operations by 2035 through electrification and innovative solutions.
Many fans, though, were not all that interested in NASCAR going electric and did not support the organization’s X post announcing the prototype racer.
“The day this hits the track I’m done,” one X user said in disgust.

Viewership is going to continue to drop and those that in the past had faithfully attended every race in their area are going to slowly stop attending any racws.

These people probably are like the Jeff Foxworthy ones “who can attend any NASCAR race in the country and not need a program.”
Imagine going to the Daytona 500 and the race is going on and 30 cars go racing past the stands in complete silence....................
NASCAR began a long slow decline after Dale Sr. died, going to electric cars in order to achieve Net Zero or sustainability goals is about as stupid of a thing as NASCAR can possibly do, it could well kill off an already dying sport.
Heck it wasn’t that many years ago when the Championship was called the Winston Cup and tobacco companies were major sponsors, cigarettes and other tobacco products were passed out as samples to fans.
It’s gonna cut times way down I would think. Are those batteries lighter than an internal combustion engine?
Imagine the first crash where they can’t put out the battery fire and have to cancel the race and evacuate the track.

In a few decades, after the ICE industry has been destroyed and EVs a total flop (we may even be back to horse and buggy days), some enterprising young teens in their garage are going to build a vehicle from parts and scraps, begin racing them on dirt roads, and the entire circle will be complete.
Yep. Part of the the attraction of auto racing is the internal combustion engine itself — the noise, the skill in fine-tuning it, keeping it running. Nobody wants to sit in the stands and watch silent EVs circle the track. They can do that at home playing video games. Of course the “engine” fires would be spectacular . . .
NASCAR has a death wish. The perfect example of how wokism and PC destroyed this sport.

I keep hearing how some EV vehicles, like the Teslas, are rather heavy and chew up tires. For a racing vehicle, there is a lot of weight to deal with.
