Are those batteries lighter than an internal combustion engine? I keep hearing how some EV vehicles, like the Teslas, are rather heavy and chew up tires. For a racing vehicle, there is a lot of weight to deal with.

No; much heavier. On the plus side, any fires from an accident could go on for hours and hours.
