I am reminded of my visit to Italy in 2015. More than one local (in Rome) I talked to... regular guys, bus and taxi drivers, were talking about the influx of illegals they were grappling with at the time. Literally coming in by the hundreds in boats from North Africa. One capsized and hundreds drowned while we were there, in fact. Very sad. These men said to me the same thing: We can’t communicate with them, nobody is vetting them, they are being cruelly exploited when they get here. One guide told us, explicitly, “Do not give them any money. Do not buy anything from them.” (they were selling selfie sticks by the boatload) One guide said to us, on our way to the Colosseum, “They are slaves. They are being used by criminal gangs. They do not belong here. Do not give them anything. We know you feel bad for them and want to help, but do not.”

Travel agencies and paid influencers go to TikTok to promote the trip, selling packages of flights that leave from Mauritania, then connect through Turkey, Colombia and El Salvador, and wind up in Managua, Nicaragua.... From there, the illegals, along with asylum seekers from other nations, are whisked north by bus with the help of smugglers.
From March to June, more than 8,500 Mauritanians arrived in the country by crossing the border illegally from Mexico, up from just 1,000 in the four months prior, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.
The trip can cost $8,000 to $10,000, a hefty sum that some families manage by selling land , all they have or livestock.
