The outgoing head of the British Army General Sir Patrick Sanders has warned that NATO may only have five years to prepare for war.
General Sir Patrick warned that the world was facing one of its most dangerous moments since 1945 when the world was last at war and that the alliance may have until the end of this decade to be ready.
Sir Patrick also highlighted that despite performing well in some areas, the UK’s armed forces were also underfunded and overstretched.
His warnings come at a time of rising global tensions over Russia’s war in Ukraine, China’s warnings of Taiwan, and the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East.

Four things are certain in life.
The next war is coming, the next recession is coming and death and taxes.
How about instead of treating Russia and China as potential military adversaries, we treat them like trading partners?
I don’t know about any of this WWIII stuff but it certainly does not help the west from a strategic standpoint to be talking about shutting down the use of fossil fuels over the next 10 years.
It advertises a period when we will be even more vulnerable.
If Russia can’t even beat Ukraine (real idiot claim) what does that say about your real idiot claim that Russia is going for conquest of Europe?
You are correct in that a ChiCom victory in the Far East will shake things up. But I think that will be only temporary.
The world will readjust, and find a new equilibrium. That new equilibrium will favor China. But it can’t be helped, as no power will care enough to really push back.
To sum this up-
we have Democrats seeking to fundamentally transform civilization’s role model for the last 200yrs-
we have Republicans largely blaming all ills on earth on our great nation.
They’re too similar for an idiot such as myself to differentiate.
It’s just very strange that on a conservative forum. I find myself spending an inordinate amount of time defending President Trump and our great nation.
The reason why neither Russia nor Ukraine can make large military gains is because Ukraine is relatively open and flat country with satellites and swarms of drones overhead. Whenever Russia or Ukraine attempted to mass troops or machinery, they were quickly identified by the opposition, targeted and destroyed.
This is why Russia is fighting a war of attrition rather than a war of territorial gain. An area is pounded by artillery, then a relatively small squadron of troops and vehicles are sent to occupy what remains. Even the Ukraine maps show that all the gains made by Ukraine during last year's Summer Offensive have been retaken and then some by the Russians.
The incursion near Kharkiv has proved very successful for Russia as it has drawn what few reserves Ukraine has left to Vovchansk allowing Russia to gain ground along the entire southern military contact line.
Russia is winning the war of attrition despite what appears to be relatively little territorial gain, unless you believe the same people who told us that Biden was the best modern president with a quick and capable mind.
I never said that Russia was going for all of Europe! That’s what the British general was implying. I argue against that.
Anyway, your use of the word “idiot” when referring to me is, at least, counterproductive. I enjoy a good conversation here on Free Republic. And I often learn something new.
But insults do nothing to advance the conversation. Please try to be more civil. And if that’s not possible, please do not reply to me. It would be a waste of both our times.
Heh, I had that for an email sig for a couple years. Nice.
> They may not have gaslit you with regards to Biden, but they sure did gaslight you on Russia. <
I don’t get why you would start with a personal insult. Such things are never helpful when trying to advance a point of view. So how’s about a polite conversation instead?
> Russia is winning the war of attrition despite what appears to be relatively little territorial gain… <
Totally agree. There is no way Russia can lose this war, absent a (foolish) intervention by NATO. The whole thing is a sad - and quite avoidable - mess.
I could be wrong but it seems as if Russia,China and North Korea have recently become fast friends. If that’s true it’s not good. At all!
I used to be a libertarian. Then I was a Neocon.
In both cases I was successfully gaslit.
The purveyors of nonsense do a very good job.
And espcsialy thanks for that ancient Greek proverb:
A society grows great when old men plant trees
in whose shade they will never sit
Doesn't apply to most of my Tulip Poplar a.k.a. Lirodendron transplants but a few from a decade ago are now providing meaningful shade!
Because neither are offering to be “trading partners” and nothing but.
China (Xi) began this by aggressively cutting ties with the “west”, restricting FDI and changing the terms of trade. It also turned actively hostile vs foreigners in China. It started pushing out on all its borders (skirmishes with India, egging on the Pakis), surrounding Taiwan during its exercises, claiming Japanese and Philippine islands, etc.
This is not the China that the US granted MFN status to in 2001.
This China openly demands an imperial regime over its “near abroad”.
Russia is the same. After the “west” financed (and built, largely) its petroleum and gas production systems, with a pile of FDI, Russia turned to similar imperial dreams. Russia did not take its oil wealth to develop its own economy and provide better lives for its people. It didnt do a Norway, though it could have.
+1
I also like fantasy thinking.
What do you think about Brazil imposing Portuguese on South America?
Who’s gonna fight it? The 3rd world hoards that these governments seem to love?
“k, half correct.
You never did say that Russia was going for all of Europe!
but you did say Russia can’t even beat Ukraine which IS a real idiot claim.
