THE BURNT TOAST THEORY

When things don’t go your way…

Last February, I had a flight out of Sydney that was cancelled several minutes after we were asked to get ready for boarding. The airline management announced that their engineer couldn’t get the aircraft to operate.

We were the only passengers left in the terminal. The airport had literally closed for the day already. You probably don’t know this but Sydney International Airport has a curfew for flights. No aircraft is allowed to fly in and out between 11PM and 6AM.

We were asked to go through immigration again and then proceeded to collect our luggages. Afterwhich, we were given Uber vouchers so that we can all go home for the night.

Everyone started to be grumpy. Well, as expected.

But my first thought was “thank God they managed to identify the operational/technical issue of the aircraft before asking us to board and eventually take off.”

This is where the Burnt Toast Theory comes in. It suggests that when delays happen or when things don’t go as planned, it could actually be a blessing in disguise. Those major or minor life’s inconveniences might actually be protecting you from something.

Essentially, if you burn your toast in the morning (something challenging happens), the time you spend making another slice may have saved you from a car accident or something bad.

Or maybe it causes you to be late for a meeting, but as you stroll in, you cross paths with someone who will become incredibly meaningful in your life that you wouldn’t have met otherwise.

It’s kind of like the universe always has your back.

As what I always tell myself:

If you get what you want, that is God’s direction. If you do not get what you want, that is God’s protection. You may not understand His ways but you just have to trust His will.

So the next time things don’t go your way, always remember that you are being redirected to something better.

That’s a lovely way to view everything. It reminds me of a story from The Book of Virtues that I used to read to the kids.

In short, a long time ago, a great prince had a beautiful pet falcon. He travelled with it throughout the countryside. One day the prince stopped to rest at a lovely stream being fed by a beautiful waterfall. As the prince cupped some of the fresh crisp water to drink, the falcon, his treasured companion, swooped down and attacked his hands. This went on a few times and the prince concluded that his falcon had turned on him. He was so thirsty, that he proceeded to climb the adjoining hill to get a shot at the bird with his bow and arrow. He got to the top of the waterfall and immediately the bird flew near, and his first shot killed the bird. The prince then turned to drink from the upper pool, only to discover the remains of an animal in the water. This animal emitted a poison, and if the prince drank the water, he would have died on the spot. His dear falcon knew this and was saving him. Sadly, the prince found out too late.

That was from memory - lol it was much more eloquently written.

Good ones Norsky! I keep wondering how the Lefty supporters don’t see the insanity.

poor falcon, I suppose the next one would be treated better. It would serve the prince right too listen to that one but have it be false. (I’m always on the side of the animal.)

I’ve just been stuck in stagnation, not getting anything done with respect to these rescues. I spent the morning looking up houses in Italy that I could buy. I was actually just going to look in Kingsport but that seemed kind of boring in comparison.

So I decided to do some work on the transport, see where the Bus shows up near the Northeast rescues. At least kind of get started on a plan. Then I realized the mama cat gets fixed for free if the litter gets fixed. Had to send an email off to see if that’s still counts if it’s a litter of one. Then I can decide where mama will have her enucleation and I can make that appointment.

I hate it when I know I have to get stuff done but I’m too lazy to do it. I don’t enjoy my lounging around near as much. LOL

Did you ever have your chocolate fudge truffle caramel ice cream? If I was anywhere near I would come and help you. As a friend of course. Just to keep you healthy.

Lol nope. Never had the ice-cream. I’m not really a chocolate fan - had it been pralines and cream it would be long gone....or Hagen Daaz Coffee. Thanks for your kind offer of help!

I just had a nap - windows open, wind blowing in, about 75 degrees and sunny. I hate to waste time on days like this sleeping, but it’s so enjoyable when the wind is blowing on me. The window is only about 2 feet away from the bed, so it’s nice.

Oh boy - good luck with the kitties. It sounds so complicated.

Soooo, house in Italy? You’re thinking of buying a house in Italy? Or you just wanted to look them up?

Thanks, Spunky. I started to watch, it already made me cry, so I’m going to watch it later. Going to sit outside now and have a glass of wine on the deck in the sunshine.

I actually started out looking for places to rent in venezia. One thing led to another and I started looking at houses all over italy. Have they ever built anything in this century? I keep finding houses built in the 1100s, 1400s, and they try to make it sound modern by saying there was an addition put on in the 1800s.

That just seems pretty risky, it’s bad enough looking to buy something here that is 50 years old. Of course Tennessee didn’t have building codes until 10 years ago. Yeah, that’s really true. They take having no government interference to a whole new level.

Pretty risky to purchase for sure. Also, I understand there are many more stray cats in Europe. Are you sure you’re going to want to go there? I doubt very much that they have the vet/rescue services over there that they do on this side of the pond.

Thank you for the link, I definitely want to see that one. I need to get my kitties schedule in order, now that I’ve started I can’t stop. I need to use this momentum otherwise I might not get it done ever! Oh, how goes the painting?

Actually that was the highlight of my visiting there. We would go to one of the fish shops and they would sell pieces and parts of other fish, it was actually labeled for cats. And then we go to the Roman ruins, for some reason they always lived there. And fed them. There were lots of Mama di Gati, little old ladies, that would make their daily Trek to feed the cats. And most of the Cities started a spay and neuter program, so they may not be as backwards as we think. I doubt if they are as backwards as east Tennessee. I don’t think people there would tolerate such animal cruelty. Even Venice tried some birth control for the pigeons. Pigeons were a big tourist draw but there was getting to be too many of them, with pigeon poo everywhere. So they just wanted to minimize the number. I never heard if it worked.

Oh that sounds delightful!

So the kitties are well fed, taken care of by kind Italian ladies and tourists. That is very nice - and would be a wonderful way to spend a few hours, especially since they supply the food!

Now that you mention that, I think I’ve seen clips of shop owners who regularly feed the kitties that wander by. They do seem to be more thoughtful of the animals. Very nice.

Actually I remember paying for the fish, but it is quite cheap in comparison to the other fish. Probably something they would just throw away otherwise.

This is so cute, I didn’t know FedEx had a map option. I’ve been waiting for my chocolate all day. I ordered some from an online German store. Yeah I know, why do I order chocolate in august. Just seemed the thing to do. It was going to be delivered by the end of the day and it seems to be the end of the day. So I logged in to see if they rescheduled and found I could see a little map of my house and I could see where the FedEx truck is. It’s not very far away! Although I’m sure by now with a 90° day it’s all melted. Oh well it will still taste yummy.

Pray for JD Vance. Check it out around 22 seconds. Looks like the same SS babe that couldn’t holster her gun.

I got a burnt toast story. I worked in ICU and made some toast in the med room, It was a locked room with windows on both sides. Well, I got real busy all of a sudden so I left the room to go to my patients room. Problem was that the toaster didn't pop up, so you had to be there. About 5 minutes later, I heard fire engine sirens heading down the street. I walked out into the hall and there was a cloud of smoke in the med room. The firemen then burst in in full gear.

Boy did I get teased for that, so I ordered a very safe but expensive toaster, $400 about 20 years ago. That didn't go over too well either.
