Trump May Have Done Too Much Winning Tonight
National Review ^ | June 28, 2024 | Michael Brendan Doughterty

Posted on 06/27/2024 9:05:15 PM PDT by JOHN ADAMS

Right now, MSNBC and CNN post-debate panels are openly talking about options for pressuring Biden to withdraw, or party officials conspiring to replace him at the convention anyway.

I truly believe that convention drama is usually energizing for a party, not demoralizing. And the selection between Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom would allow Democrats to feel like the party of the future again, rather than a party litigating a recent past that voters hated.

If Biden’s bad performance really does lead to his departure from the race, Republicans will miss him.

“...to bask in the success that was just experienced by us. ONE DAY! SO COULD YALL PLEASE F+%K O/F FOR ONE NIGHT!!!”

I mentioned to my wife that it sounds like Biden was terrible.

“Yeah. I hear they are going to run Newsom. That will be terrible.”

“Well, I’m not sure if they can, or will run him. But I think he is too far left and has a terrible record in California for the middle-of-the-road democrats.”

“It doesn’t matter - they’ll just cheat again. We’ll never have a Republican president again!!”

Skipped the debate. Is the characterization in this story true?

Joe was obviously prepared for all the questions. There was probably some communication between CNN and DNC about what the questions were going to be.

But Joe couldn't bring off the prepared answers. He'd start out firmly and then lose track and drift off into mumbles and non sequiturs.

Trump was lucid and began ignoring the questions halfway into the debate. CNN would ask the question and Trump instead spoke on topics of his own choice. The CNN team did not pester him about it.

I agree. I think Trump pulled his punches in the debate but could not stop Biden from self destructing within 15 seconds of opening his mouth. I want Biden in until the bloody end because he is so beatable that he will have an impact on congressional races. That is why Dems in Congress were panicking about getting a replacement for him after watching the debate.

Whomever is the Dem nominee will have to defend both Biden's record and their own record as well. They will also have to gear up a presidential campaign from nothing and immediately establish themselves as a credible candidate and potential president.

To say that Newsome would be the Dems best alternative suggests the nature of the problem. California is a mess and Newsome is a preening narcissist. Clinton will be a sentimental favorite for the Democrats as an alternative to Biden, but in 2016 she lost to Trump, dogged by health problems and her long trail of sleaze and scandals.

Meanwhile, a sour Biden and Democratic political rivals like Harris are unlikely to make a transition to a new nominee simple or easy. And Republicans will be energized, unified, and eager for combat by the prospect of a massive victory up and down the entire ballot. Who knows, but the GOP in Congress may even pull the trigger on subpoenas and potential jailing of Garland and others.

In sum, like jumping from a sinking boat into a sea filled with aggressive sharks, for the Democrats switching Biden out solves one problem but puts them in the midst of others.

If for example, you say Trump tops out with a 7 point lead post debate bump, you plop Newsom in there, suddenly he’s ahead? Or Pete or Harris? It doesn’t feel likely just from a logical thinking point of view.

If you are someone with White House eyes, going in now this late in the game, you carry your own baggage, plus the current White House’s. It doesn’t seem likely that more than half of America would be down with that.

But who knows what Joe will have to say about it. He could fight them to the end and it could get very messy for them.

All they have to do is lock him in a room and play Hail to the Chief every once in a while and Biden will think he's doing a great job as President. He has no clue what is going on and he isn't going to fight anything. He just needs to take a nap.

Trump couldn’t help but do good paired up against a mind-numbed zombie. We have more to worry about this election being stolen again, no matter who the RATS run with, even Biden. These people are desperate, and have been since they rigged the 2020 election. They will go to any lengths to keep Trump from the White House.

Awww! Thank you! (trying not to get a swollen ego)! 😂
Makes me think of a line from a movie (cant remember):
Character 1 does something to make herself noticeable//
Character 2 enjoys it & flatters her with praise //
Character 1 (primping & proudly viewing her reflection,
she spins around): “Really, you’re too too
kind. Oh, but enough about me. Let’s talk
about you..... What do you think of me.” 🤣

“I thick they’ll keep Biden and just replace the ineligible Harris for ho drags the ticket down a lot”

She does drag the ticket down a lot. So does Joe. But they are not going to dump her, because then they’ll be opened to charges that they alienated black people with their racist dumping of Kamala. Blacks don’t like her one bit, but they are going to be so fearful of alienating them that she’ll stay on the ticket.

Trump is going to win. We get to watch and help in our respective capacities, however minutely.

Then again, they might kill Trump in desperation.

Newsome would be a much bigger challenge than Biden, he is a better liar, attractive to women, (at least the indepenedents and Dems) and has been pandering to blacks with promises of reparation payment, idk

I agree, some Democrats would be stronger candidates, like Gov. Shapiro of PA

[If they replace Biden now, they get a big boost in the polls]

For blacks, the only acceptable replacement for Biden is Kamala, or maybe some other black pol. Same reason Hakeem Jeffries is House Minority Leader. It’s his turn due to seniority and passing him over would antagonize black voters. If Kamala is overlooked, from a black vote perspective, Katy bar the door. Black voters could leave the presidential line blank, stay home or vote GOP to spite the Dems. Any would be disastrous for the Dems.

Then there’s the fact that Biden has locked up the delegates. Changing the rules would be, to coin a Democrat expression, an insurrection, a coup in all but name. It would touch off unending chaos at future primary fights. They won’t do it just to improve their chances for one election, especially since the only viable replacement is Kamala. She helps to keep the black vote but does worse than Biden in every other demographic.

The Democrats are stuck in what chess players call a zugzwang. Every possible move leads to electoral defeat.

Debates are a contest between rival sophists. In TV debates, though, affect seems like a much bigger deal than what’s actually said. JFK came off better than Nixon because Nixon shunned makeup, came off looking sweaty and unshaven compared to Kennedy’s matinee idol cool. Radio listeners thought Nixon did better, but by the 60s TV watchers formed the overwhelming majority of the debate audience. Thanks to his underwhelming affect on TV, Nixon went from anointed heir to Eisenhower’s era of peace, strength and prosperity to also-ran.

I read somewhere on another thread that the best thing Trump can do at this point is declare RFK Jr the true Democrat nominee.

The Democrats will make a deal with Jill and she will have the delegates released.

This debate was a pyrrhic victory for Trump

Yep, Biden will be dumped from the ticket before the 4th of July.

Never going to happen. The DemoCommies are stuck with Premier Josef Stolen for the duration.

The same folks who were clutching pearls yesterday over the debate being fixed against Trump, are now clutching pearls that Trump can't beat anybody else.

I expect better of Freepers.
