Environmental activists ‘Just Stop Oil’ spraypaint Stonehenge as Good Samaritan tries to stop them in wild video

Environmental protesters sprayed paint on Britain’s Stonehenge on Wednesday, with orange marks covering some of the stones of the prehistoric megalithic structure on the eve of the summer solstice celebrations.

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument, police said in a statement.

“This is extremely upsetting and our curators are investigating the extent of the damage,” English Heritage, the charity that manages Stonehenge, said on X. Stonehenge remains open, it added.

The monument, one of Britain’s most visited tourist spots, also holds spiritual significance and attracts thousands of revellers, spiritualists and tourists during the summer solstice – the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

In video released by environmental group Just Stop Oil, two protesters were seen running towards two of Stonehenge’s megaliths and spraying paint as another person attempted to stop them.

Members of the public were able to walk around within the stone circle, located in southern England, until 1977 when it was fenced off due to concerns over damage from a sharp rise in the number of visitors.

“Just Stop Oil are a disgrace,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on X of the protest at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hunt down every one of those Neolithic bastards who built Stonehenge 5 thousand years ago. They are responsible for the climate crisis we are in today. If they hadn’t survived we wouldn’t be so close to extinction now.

They do make temporary, water based spray paint. I doubt these “environmentalists” used it however.

Seems odd that they would damage something that is a testament to the knowledge and engineering of those great people before the industrial age. I would think they would be exalting their efforts rather than destroying them.

Getting paint out of stone is very difficult.

The restorer has a real problem. If sufficient detergents and scrubbing are applied to remove the paint, it will also remove the patina, which is part of the stone and develops over hundreds of years. The surface of the stone reacts with the environment and changes gradually to a hydrated layer mixed with environmental dust, soot, and biological material. If this layer is removed, stone has been removed.

And once the patina has been removed from one area, that area will no longer match. The restorer then has to choose between leaving the unmatched area, or applying a false patina to blend it in. But then you are painting Stonehenge! Surely that can’t be the right thing to do.
