Will the last person to leave California please turn off the lights? Assuming they aren't in the middle of one of California's increasingly frequent brownouts, that is.
Relocation firm moveBuddha looked at searches for 100,000 moves just this year, and five of the top ten were people looking to get out of the Golden State for almost anywhere else. "5 of the top 10 exit metros are in California, the firm reported on Monday. "Los Angeles has the highest interest in outbound moves, with 42% more outbound inquiries than runner-up San Francisco. Per capita, the prize goes to San Francisco."
The Mercury News reported way back in 2012, "California was supposed to have about 40 million people by now, according to population projections made before the Great Recession, but a slowdown in births and immigration has forced the state’s demographers to push back that expected milestone by at least six years."
Instead, Sacramento's Department of Finance estimated that "Forty million people will live in California by the end of 2018 and 50 million by 2048."
Even the revised prediction now looks quaint after reading this report from Planetizen:
“The U.S. Census Bureau reported in March that California’s population as of last July had dropped to an estimated 38,965,000,” wrote George Skelton, Capitol Journal columnist for the Los Angeles Times on April 8. “That’s down by 75,400 in a year — and 573,000 below California’s peak of 39.5 million in 2020.”
California — for the first time in the state's long history of rapid population growth — lost a congressional seat in the 2020 reapportionment. The state could lose as many as five more in 2030.

Swell. California has been surrendered to the leftists for a long time, and now the locusts are making their way across the country. There will be some who are conservative or independent, but I doubt it will be the majority.
It’s all good. Only the taxpayers are leaving.
Bwahahahahaha...
You are correct. With moonbats, problems are always the fault of others. Commie voting patterns don’t change.
Then why does Deep State have to steal CA’s elections?
With its population of foreigners California will become a very foreign state and a place that even Americans born in 1970 won’t recognize as American in culture or politics.
If a lot more of the billionaires leave they’re really in trouble. A few of them like Musk and Larry Ellison of Oracle left, but most are still there. They’re insulated from the worst things going on there. They probably all have their own large electric generators with plenty of fuel and they live well away from the homeless, drug addicts etc.
At some point they could get targeted by lunatic Democrat prosecutors like Trump was. They’d be smart to think about leaving.
Just?
So this and the 10,000 similarly breathless "Hey, look what I just noticed!" stories which have come out over the past several years are "news" only to those who haven't been paying attention at all.
California's population had continued to rise only due to "natural increase" (more births than deaths) and, obviously, the massive influx of foreigners. Now, finally, those factors are not keeping pace with the departures. But people have been voting with their feet for many, many years, and the ongoing mass exodus is hardly all "good" people who make their destinations better places (e.g. Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, all of which have been heavily Californicated and there's no sign of it stopping).
If California's decline continues at this rate, there is a chance that Texas could pass it in population within another couple of decades. At which point Texas will be the "New California" in more ways than just head count; its politics will resemble California's too. At the very least they sure won't resemble today's Texas, which still leans a little to the right.
But that can't possibly happen in Texas. Yeah.... about 50 years ago they said that about California too.
We need a wall along the California border.
Locusts.
Where I just emigrated to 100% of my fellow California refugees are conservative Republicans.
It was New Yorkers that destroyed this State, starting in the '60s. My family has been here for five generations, but both of our girls have left for North Carolina.
I can't leave, for obvious reasons. Cutting the "environmental" legs out from under the globo-fascists is a life commitment.
I was born and raised in SE LA county.
I got the hell out as soon as I could.
I could see East coast liberals moving in
and screwing up my home.
Just for your education I went to a very “Blue”
Washington state and am now hiding in rural extremely “Blue” Hawaii.
Both are far better than California.
Being up here in Canada the entire population of Canada for quite a while was less than that of Cali although close in numbers. It appears Canada has now surged ahead a bit because of this stall and now shrinkage for the not so golden state. Canada is now well over 40 million. Purely due to immigration I might note.
My 90 year old father in law keeps telling me that he doesn’t want to die here (Elk Grove, CA). His wife of 65 years has advanced Alzheimer’s disease and they are too fragile to move right now. My wife is living with them taking care of them. Crappy crappiola.
You left WA for Hawaii?
I left Portland, where I was born and lived most of my life, except for growing up in Orange Cty CA, for Redmond, WA. It’s REALLY expensive here. Maybe the expense would be more justifiable if we at least had good weather!
Beautiful here though...
No, they move to a red State to escape California and then start voting for the same crazy laws that caused them to move in the first place. Can’t fix stupid.
The results of Californians leaving has been dismal. Look at Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado. These were all reliable red states until Californians showed up. They are working on other states like Texas.
And they are hellish people to live with too.
