House passes defense bill automatically registering men 18-26 for draft
FOX ^ | 6/14/24 | Elizabeth Elkind

House of Representatives passed a measure on Friday automatically registering men aged 18 to 26 for selective service.

It was part of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which sets out the U.S. government’s military and national security priorities over the next fiscal year.

This year's NDAA authorizes $895.2 billion in military spending, a $9 billion increase from fiscal 2024.

While it hasn’t been invoked in over half a century, it’s mandatory for all male U.S. citizens to register for the selective service, also known as the military draft, when they turn 18. Failure to register is classified as a felony and comes with a host of legal challenges.

I’d like to know, why isn’t this being shouted from the rooftops? I can guarantee there’s a lot of young men and women who would not like to fight for Pedo Joe.

I have a feeling that there’s a whole bunch of young men that’re going to become Canadian pretty darn soon.

BTW, isn’t it ironic that your name is “Openurmind” and yet you are telling me what is and isn’t my concern?

Were they automatically signed up, by dear Government, or, did they voluntarily complete and submit the form.

Which, by the way, wasn’t even compulsory or followed up on…just required.

“Trump is gaining among that age group. Why push them away.”

Do you think they really want Trump to win?

Way too much drama on this thread. If you want a good history of the selective service system and the draft in this country, go here:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_Service_System

We have been an all voluntary service since the 70’s. Selective service registration has been around since the early 1900’s with the exception a few years in the 70’s between when Ford did away with it and Carter reinstated it. I was in that group that did not have to register but then voluntarily joined in 1980. Those of us the were already in uniform never had to go back and register, so I have no selective service registration number, which has only come up once in the 45 years since. At some point one of the agencies processing my security clearance asked for this on a form and I had to tell them I didn’t have one. At first they were like “well you broke the law”. By that time I had been in uniform for about 5 years. Im like a) I’m in the military and b) registration wasn’t required in early 1980. The dummies had to get educated on their own laws regarding this.

Women are already eligible for the draft

Except there is no draft, and having one requires 218 Members of Congress, 51 Senators, and a President.

"Which, by the way, wasn’t even compulsory or followed up on…just required."

I remember seeing TV advertisements about males that reach the age of 18 must register with Selective Service. The ad specifically said "it was the law," and they could face jail time if they failed to register as required. If I remember correctly, the registration cards were available at post offices. That's where my sons got theirs to send in, and they each got a card back from the government.

I can’t imagine some white guy joining the military today with this deeply corrupt America last, leftist leadership.

Yeah,

But you should see the Russians. Latest reports claim 144,000,000 Russian casualties. Even all their pet dogs and cats have been killed or crippled. Fact checked and true!/sarc

What a waste of human life.

It was predictable that this war would happen, what the Russians would go for, and how it would end.

It was entirely avoidable, there was no real need for this loss of life and destruction.

If it is true that this is in reality part of a bigger grand strategy to weaken the Russians and that we wanted this war, caused it intentionally, while at least that shows we’re not entirely incompetent, that’s outright evil.

If true, and there in no smoking gun indicating it is, this is right up there with the most despicable and vile national policies a nation has ever pursued in self interest. But so far this is just a theory.

I’m way past my prime but would gladly take the place of my eighteen year old grandson. When being fed into a meat grinder like fighting the Russians in Ukraine, what does it matter if the two weeks in country KIA was 18 or 65?

Except that's not US doctrine and not how the fight would go if we went in there.

The GOP is working hard to deny Trump a 2024 election victory. There’s no reason to pass the bill now along with the military abortion ban.

In just 3 years Biden destroys our American All Volunteer Military from 1973.

Still it was brought up and passed by the House which I assume was because we can’t get the men we need.

But now they’ll have the tool they need. Scary.

"I know kids who didn’t send them in (students), to no big deal."

My sons were born in 1966 and 1971.

This page (Encyclopedia) says the draft ended in 1973, but Carter re-instated registration requirements when Russia invaded Afghanistan in 1980.

Here's the excerpt about Carter:

End of the draft
The draft formally ended in 1973; young men no longer had to register with the Selective Service System. In 1980, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, and American president Jimmy Carter (1924–; served 1977–81) reinstated the registration requirement. All males between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five who were born on or after January 1, 1960, were required to register. This law remained in place into the twenty-first century. Because prosecuting those who fail to register is cost prohibitive and counterproductive for the government, many young men fail to register on their eighteenth birthday or do not register at all.

In recent years we raised the age to 42 which meant we were accepting 42 year old grandmothers, the Air Force is still taking 42 year olds.

It is a big deal. Not registering precludes you from working for the government or a government contractor.
