Should the Trump VP Calculus Change?
National Review ^ | June 14, 2024 3:13 PM | RICH LOWRY

Who knows what Trump is really thinking, but I’ve thought Rubio was the strongest pick — assuming they can find a way around the Florida thing — because he might help solidify the change happening among Latino voters and is an energetic and likable campaigner. But in terms of the electoral map, Trump is looking so strong in Arizona and Nevada, it may be that he should be looking for potential help elsewhere, especially with Biden so dependent on the Blue Wall states and holding up in them better given his strength among older white voters.

So, yes, it may be that Trump needs an old white guy on the ticket!

The pro-J. D. Vance forces are going to argue that Vance has Rust Belt appeal, so he could help in the Blue Walls. Tim Scott might be able to help by taking some of the edge off the Democratic advantage in the cities in the Blue Wall states.

An entirely different model would be picking Glenn Youngkin to make a play for Virginia. If all else stays the same, Trump doesn’t need any of the Blue Walls if he wins Georgia, Arizona, and Virginia. But this would be a risky bet compared to winning back states that he won in 2016 and only narrowly lost in 2020.

I don’t know what kind of calculus Trump is doing; but if he picks any of the aforementioned prospects other than Ben Carson he’s making a huge mistake in my opinion. I don’t trust “any” one of them to have the best interests of this nation and its people at heart! I think he should pick Kari Lake as his running mate. Don’t bother to ask me why but that’s what my gut tells me!

Whoever gives Trump the best chance to win. I couldn’t name one big positive thing a vp has actually done in my lifetime. So I couldn’t care less what the ideology of the vp is. As long as he or she helps him win.

And if Trump dies in office, we have a liberal as the new President? No thanks!

Maybe, but he’ll bring in the black vote. And libs will be too afraid to attack him because... racism.

Blacks who are going to vote for Trump will do so regardless of who he picks and may see a black running mate as pandering. Furthermore, a black running mate will undoubtedly cost him some white votes. Maybe not many, but definitely some. Perhaps enough to lose North Carolina and Georgia.

Anyways, I don't know why the conventional wisdom is that we have to try so hard to get black votes.

Latinos are where the money is. They've been largely abandoned by the Democrats and they're the biggest minority voting block out there (even if multi-ethnic Latinos don't vote as a monolithic block).

Scott is a native of South Carolina. White voters there elected him as senator. They’re no different than white voters in North Carolina and Georgia.

Besides Rubio, I cannot think of a single Hispanic who would be a qualified candidate for VP.

Trump doesn’t “need” a VP candidate to “help” him win! If there’s no thievery, he’s a lock!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

This. And ONLY this.

It is 10000% IRRELEVANT what kind of VP he/she would be, or who would be the best for 2028.

If we don’t win in 2024, nothing else matters.

Eyes on the prize, folks. November 2024, and NOTHING ELSE.

What about 2025 through 2028 if Trump dies in office?

????????????????????

If he selects Sarah Sanders or Byron Donalds, that won’t be an issue.

Trump should pick someone who scares Deep State even more than Trump does.

Alex Jones fits that criterion, or it's at least a tie, but Jones could never stomach being a politician.

OMG!!!

Same thing the Dems and entire media are worried about, with Bribem....NOT!

Pres Trump has the same chances of ‘dying in office’ as anyone 10 - 20 years younger than him. He’s healthy and has excellent longevity genes.

Rep/Dr Ronnie Jackson (who was a White House physician, for YEARS!!!) declared Pres Trump one of the healthiest people he’s ever seen.

Sheeeesh.

Youngkin might be a hard sell...

Youngkin is a globalist - wasted first 2 years in office trying to avoid controversy. Acting mildly conservative this year.

Trump needs someone the deep state hates.

That really says it all. We’ve all been getting in the weeds, palavering about a million different things. The only thing that matters at this point is PDJT’s inauguration in 2025.

Whitaker would have made an excellent Attorney General . 1000 times better than Session or Barr, but he never would’ve been confirmed when he was acting A/G.
