Should the Trump VP Calculus Change?
National Review ^ | June 14, 2024 3:13 PM | RICH LOWRY

Posted on 06/14/2024 3:29:55 PM PDT by conservative98

Who knows what Trump is really thinking, but I’ve thought Rubio was the strongest pick — assuming they can find a way around the Florida thing — because he might help solidify the change happening among Latino voters and is an energetic and likable campaigner. But in terms of the electoral map, Trump is looking so strong in Arizona and Nevada, it may be that he should be looking for potential help elsewhere, especially with Biden so dependent on the Blue Wall states and holding up in them better given his strength among older white voters.

So, yes, it may be that Trump needs an old white guy on the ticket!

The pro-J. D. Vance forces are going to argue that Vance has Rust Belt appeal, so he could help in the Blue Walls. Tim Scott might be able to help by taking some of the edge off the Democratic advantage in the cities in the Blue Wall states.

An entirely different model would be picking Glenn Youngkin to make a play for Virginia. If all else stays the same, Trump doesn’t need any of the Blue Walls if he wins Georgia, Arizona, and Virginia. But this would be a risky bet compared to winning back states that he won in 2016 and only narrowly lost in 2020.

Never take advice from Rich Lowry. He’s a spineless squish. Destroyed National Review.

Long gone are the days of William F Buckley, John Derbyshire, and for laughs, Florence King.

Rubio, the clown who rode the Tea Party movement into office then immediately hitched his wagon to the McCain/Grahamnesty train and tried like crazy to push through amnesty, saying it wasn’t amnesty since the illegals had to drop a few coins in a basket at the border (unless they were smart enough to use the pages of exemptions). Trump needs to consider whether the base will support his vp, since they are usually the heir apparent. Rubio is a no-go for me.

Youngkin looks frumpy in that photo.
Is he trying to slouch and NOT be taller than Trump.
Low energy standing next to Trump is not a good optic.
Stand tall, Youngkin, for cryinoutloud.

Trump should pick someone who scares Deep State even more than Trump does.

If that’s possible.

And I hope it is.

Oh, it's definitely possible, considering that Trump never even fired Fauxci or locked up Hillary Clinton. Maybe he'll be tougher on the Deep State during his second term. And maybe Lucy won't pull the football away from Charlie Brown this time.

I think we are past the “ gotta be from 2 different states to get the electoral votes”. Trump is a national figure, really state of residence not that critical.

Every single presidential candidate has been a "national figure". Unless we can expedite a Constitutional amendment, Trump's VP needs to be a non-Floridian if we are to win the election.

Daily Mail today reports that Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary recommends “North Dakota governor and former businessman Dough Burghum as “a potential buffer to the often unpredictable former president.”

I heard Burghum speak recently and totally agree. Smartest, brightest, most personable of all possible VP candidates and excellent presidential material.Evenlooks presidential.

Recently Trump hinted at moving to Texas. He ought to do so. Now. Just to put Florida possibles into play.

Just to mess with our heads.

Unless of course he fools everyone and picks Abbott. Which would be OK with me.

Whoever gives Trump the best chance to win. I couldn’t name one big positive thing a vp has actually done in my lifetime. So I couldn’t care less what the ideology of the vp is. As long as he or she helps him win.

I love JD Vance but I don’t trust DeWine to appoint his replacement.

I almost think he needs to stay away from the congressional picks. They can all choose to run in 2028..He needs to just pick someone he can trust who is strong enough to help him accomplish what needs to be done in the fastest and most efficient way.

Long gone are the days of William F Buckley,

I was in 8th grade watching TV and came across a guy with a weird accent who was saying things that made sense. Started to watch regularly and then so did my Dad.

It was Buckley and I've been a Conservative ever since then!

Overtones of Reagan/Bush. We didn’t know it then but what a debacle that was for the country. Reagan’s worst mistake by far and the beginning of the end of America. Without a real opposition party to the communist dems, America was destined to fail.
