There is more carbon dioxide than ever in the atmosphere. That’s bad for the climate

The amount of planet-warming carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere has hit a new record, as humanity struggles to rein in emissions of greenhouse gasses from burning fossil fuels.

The new record comes as tens of millions of people are grappling with extreme weather in the United States. Much of the western U.S. is experiencing the first major heat wave of the year, which is driving temperatures 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than what is normal for June. In the Southwest, temperatures are lingering well above 100 degrees.

Such extreme, prolonged heat is directly related to human-caused climate change, scientists say. All the extra carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere traps heat, and leads to more intense, frequent and persistent heat waves, and other extreme weather such as powerful hurricanes and heavy rain storms.

“Carbon dioxide is plant food.”

No. Plants use carbohydrates as food.

I know why we don’t need more CO2, the triffids are coming!!!

Spray 'em with sea water!

I thought carbon monoxide was the bad one?

When did that change?

It is great for the trees, grass and plants because they have more food to turn into OXYGEN. Sheesh you NPRites are STUPID!

This is absolute unadulterated bullshit. The geologic record shows CO2 levels are below average levels in past. Levels have been 20x greater in past, over 7000 ppm, and there was no runaway global warming.

They are measuring the current rise from historically low levels.

Seems I had read of this phenomenon in a much earlier posting. If it applied then, why wouldn’t it hold true now?

If it’s bad for the Climate the Climate will fix it. That’s what it does.

Ignorance and stupidity must be superpowers, because those that have them never seem to lose them.

CO2 is NOT at the highest levels ever, far from it. But even if that’s true for the last couple hundred years, you still have to deal with the fact that measurements taken decades or more ago were not made in exactly the same locations or elevations, and were done with different (and likely less precise) devices.

It was certainly much higher at many points in not just human history, but Earth’s, and life seems to have done just fine.

Who even knows if higher temps from higher CO2 are bad - I’ll bet that the dinosaurs wouldn’t have thought so.

Finally, it’s not even in our control except to a very small (and statistically meaningless) degree. If she and other climate tyrants want to affect the temperature, they’d have a better shot at doing so by having a conversation with the Sun.

F’ing idiots.

Longer growing seasons, lower heating bills, and not being trapped inside by the cold and snow.

What’s not to like?

Everything is based on those samples anyways. We have nothing else to work with.

And the vast variation of amounts of CO2 in those ice core samples varies so much you cannot say they are all over inflated. And all of them would be skewed in the same direction. What would shift would be the total amount, not the rises and falls.

Besides, nobody has yet proved that CO2 has caused one iota of global temperature change.

We simply don’t know. The point of that graph anyways, is that there is no correlation between atmospheric CO2 levels and global temperatures.

Plants MAKE carbohydrates.

From CO2.

And the shell critters are so good at it that they came close to end all life on earth until human heroes figured out how to put some back in the atmosphere.

Nobody ever asked the polar bears and penguins if they like the freezing winters. And as for the coastal flooding, for that you build dykes, which is employment for low-skilled workers. Government money spent. Goody goody gumdrops. More water = more fish.

Are you a credible source? I think the temperature in Phoenix and Tucson has always varied between 68F and 72 F year-round. It's the best climate ever! Except you lose out to Redwood City, California...

Thanks! I was going to go looking for that chart. You are spot on. Carbon dioxide has been far higher in the past.

Do you ever wonder why they call windmills and solar panels “green energy”?
All green things on earth consume C02. Oil is actually the “green” energy unless I am missing something.

Interesting fact- commercial nurseries pump low flow extra CO2 into their sealed greenhouses— to increase plant growth rate and the plants increase their Oxygen output.

Wonder how many of these “experts” at NPR realize that if one gets too much oxygen... one dies. It is a balance of Nature. Ronald Reagan pointed this out decades ago. Forests grow more and put out more O2 in response to C02 levels.

Photosynthetic process requires C02.

Total BS…CO2 levels are still only in part per million levels and have only a minuscule effect if any on global temperatures. Heat waves and droughts have been around for a long time. Look at temperatures and droughts in the mid 1930s to see real heat waves.
