NYC congestion pricing plan shelved indefinitely The first-in-the-toll nation program was expected to be a financial windfall for the cash-strapped MTA. By Andrew Siff and Jennifer Millman

The MTA announced Wednesday it will indefinitely pause its plans to implement a first-in-the-nation congestion pricing system amid concerns about current economic conditions in the city and the pace of midtown Manhattan’s recovery. News 4’s Romney Smith reports. What to Know

The MTA is pushing "pause" indefinitely on New York City's first-in-the-nation congestion pricing plan, according to an official briefed on the plans. The toll program, years in the making, had been set to roll out later this month.

No new start date has been set.

The official briefed on the plans says the MTA will circulate a list of projects that could be impacted without known funding. Congestion pricing was expected to be a $15 billion windfall for the cash-strapped agency, delivering capital to help pay for new trains and signals and other modernization to the aging system.

The "indefinite pause" development came shortly after a high-level source briefed on Gov. Kathy Hochul's thinking said the Democrat was considering delaying the launch.

The source said the idea would be to hold the toll plan until and after the courts weigh in and until and after final federal signoff. It would also allow time to gather more metrics on how the city's commuting patterns are recovering post-pandemic and for people's economic outlooks to improve, according to the source.

Implementing the toll now would hurt everyday people too much, the source says of the governor's thinking. And midtown Manhattan hasn't recovered to the point where this would be the right time for congestion pricing.

So... Hochul the Fool is worried about the backlash and legal problems with charging drivers for using roads they already paid for.

Making it more expensive for people to travel to a place that’s already a dump in decline was about as dumb an idea as I’ve ever seen.

And the state of New Jersey is absolutely retarded for suing to stop it. They should be encouraging New York to charge a $12,000 fee instead of $12.

“And midtown Manhattan hasn’t recovered to the point where this would be the right time for congestion pricing.”

apparently a “congestion” surcharge isn’t a great idea when the city collapse already took care of the congestion ...

Yep, and the congestion will only get better as the city collapses. Who would want to do business in NYC with all the lawfare and other crime going on.

I was in London when congestion pricing started. The congestion area continues to grow.

The trend for years now is for businesses to look at places other than New York.

Can't crush the NYC economy forever what with an election looming.

Indefinitely she says, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. It just means she is waiting for a more opportune time. Like after the election.

The true and short reason for the “pause”? It’s an entirely Dim proposal and it will hurt many Dims in NYC and there is an election in November. Come January 2025 the “pause” will be over. Typical of the hypocritical Dims, playing politics with their own policy.

I could easily see a trucker strike over this.

Or, just flat out refusing to deliver to NYC.

Either way, it will make everything in NYC even more expensive.

Congestion pricing was expected to be a $15 billion windfall for the cash-strapped agency,

Have you ever notice when a politician makes a prediction on how much a program will bring in is always higher then actually happens and the reverse is also true, any cost estimate for any government program will always be lower then what the final cost is?

first-in-the-nation congestion pricing system

I guess they haven't heard of I-66 in Virginia (DC metro area).

The “congestion” price per day on trucks alone will raise the cost of living in Manhattan, a bit, as shippers (of EVERYTHING) will pass along the extra fees to the originator of the shipment, and they will pass it along to the receiving customers.

Just like high taxes the Dims never consider the economic consequences of their own favored policies, because it is always the “social” reason for the policy alone they pretend to care about.

I-66 is a toll road. The NYC congestion pricing was designed to cover an entire geographic area in NYC by imposing the fee on every motorist who entered the area on every route.

Central and now most of greater London does this it drastically improved traffic conditions. What used to take 2 to 4 hours can be done in an hour or less now. NYC and London both have very effective subways and metros for the masses to ride. It’s taken me three hours to get from LaGuardia to Soho at an average speed of 5mph and less than 8 mpg in a rented compact sedan. The only reason I had that car was the next day we were leaving Manhattan for Boston then Maine. It cost $75 per parking spot per night with no in and out to keep that car for two days while eating for the wife to get to LaGuardia.and spend the night in Manhattan. So this would be welcome to those who can afford it in Manhattan. Just like Central Londoners.

Right, and they do that by varying the existing tolls across bridges and tunnels, yes?
