What happens if a presidential candidate cannot take office due to death or incapacitation before January 2025?

I know, I know, it is a morbid question. Presidential candidates Trump and Biden are the oldest modern presidential candidates we’ve seen since Ronald Reagan ran for his second term. Donald Trump will be 78 on Inauguration Day 2025 and Joe Biden will have just turned 82. And even though my colleague Bill Galston and I have written about the fact that both men are most likely what the scientists call “superagers” and not at all likely to die or become incapacitated any time soon – the question is being asked by lots of people.

What isn’t answered is (1) what happens after ballots printed? and (2) What happens once voting starts and has not finished?

According to Ballotpedia the earliest voting starts on September 20, 2024, in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Virginia.

If it’s after the election, the Vice President-Elect takes office as President according to the 20th Amendment. People forget that there was an assassination attempt on FDR before he took office in March of 1933.

The 20th Amendment was passed because of this and the long time between the election, November, and the President taking office, March.

The guy who attempted to kill FDR (and who did kill the Mayor of Chicago) was executed within in weeks of his crime.

A big question is who first nominates a new Presidential candidate after the convention? I suppose they must have rules in both parties to deal with that.

The State Legislature is ultimately responsible for appointing the Electors.

If Electors pledged to a dead man are “chosen” by the voters, the State Legislature will provide them with alternate instructions.

I stopped right there when this guy claimed Biden wouldn't likely become incapacitated any time soon. He was incapacitated before the 2020 election was stolen. Elaine Kamarck is either a liar or incapacitated herself.
