California ‘clean energy’ company set to bulldoze more than 3,500 Joshua trees, so coastal homes can go ‘carbon neutral’

“What’s yours is mine, and what’s mine is my own.” James Joyce penned those words while writing Ulysses, but he could have easily written them were he composing a report on the political attitudes of the pseudo-elite greenie left of the modern era.

From an article by Greg Rehner at Fox News:

California clean energy project threatens thousands of protected Joshua trees: reports

A California-based renewable energy company plans to clear thousands of protected Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert to make way for a solar project that will generate electricity for nearly 180,000 homes in coastal neighborhoods instead of the impacted communities, according to reports.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the company, Avantus, is planning to build the Aratina Solar Project on 2,300 acres near Boron and Desert Lake, California, two towns in Kern County.

And, according to Rehner, this construction project spanning “2,300 acres will mean the “destruction” of more than 3,500 “protected” Joshua trees. So, not only will the electricity generated be diverted away from the community that’s actually generating it, but the people who live there will now be left with an ugly landscape of barren desert, screaming of corporate colonialism and “green” elitism.

Here’s this, also from Rehner:

Residents of the poverty-stricken towns are angered by the project, not just because of the construction dust, but also because the land where the solar facility will be located is home to endangered desert tortoises.

The residents’ concerns reportedly were ignored by county officials, who unanimously approved the project.

(Somebody better check the county officials’ bank accounts.)

But, it gets worse. This is from the Aratina Solar Project’s website:

The project consists of a solar array with a solar generation capacity of up to 530 MWac and an up to 600 MWac battery energy storage system.

Cover the Earth with solar panels and wind turbines.

Sounds very environmental.

If they built in between the trees, the trees would vaporize from the heat. Though there really is no shortage of empty desert outside of the Joshua tree habitat.

Batteries to be “carbon neutral?”

Are they kidding me?

From the linked article of the company doing the Aratina Solar Center:

The project consists of a solar array with a solar generation capacity of up to 530 MWac and an up to 600 MWac battery energy storage system...

They show their ignorance. Yes, solar production is stated in Watts or multiples thereof (i.e. kilowatts and megawatts). But storage is in watts/time (i.e. watthours, kilowatt hours kWh, megawatt hours mWh). Without the time component for storage it's meaningless.

It's like talking about the flow rate of your water house in GPM (gallons per minute), then talking about the volume of the bucket you fill with the water house (i.e. 2 gallon bucket). Just like water volume has different units from flow rate, solar production has different units from battery storage.

“600 MWac”

While I’ve never seen “MWac”, I guess it means Megawatts after conversion to AC...rather than at the battery level.

As to using something like Megawatts for storage, I think that means the amount of power a battery bank can provide (provided its not burning up) for 4 HOURS. So 2400 Megawatt-hours, in this case. But no way to be sure - and the IDIOT REPORTERS who think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread are TOTALLY CLUELESS as to what they’re reporting, since, “Math is Hard” or they wouldn’t be ‘reporters’.

In perhaps ten years, or even less, these grotesque monuments of misplaced concern for the “sustainable” environment shall be standing abandoned and useless, a major blight on the landscape, and a burden to to be removed at great public expense. The windmills will stand like giant ghostly sentinels watching over the folly of bad engineering and worse economic policy, until perhaps centuries from now the concrete and steel in their structure shall crumble and they have become a rubble pile.

The mischief knaves make lasts far beyond their lifetimes, and only leaves a negative impact on whatever this mischief touches.

According to their web-site, if they do not go along with this project, more Joshua trees will be destroyed by the global warming! So actually, they are saving the trees!

What a baloney!

Another point from the web site - the project will raise local temperature, but only in the nearby areas!

So they will raise the temperature, and kill the trees to save the trees and lower the temperature - Orwellian!
