Aquaman might not mind if the oceans rise, but moviegoers might.
That’s one of the takeaways from a new study conducted by researchers who set out to determine if today’s Hollywood blockbusters are reflective of the current climate crisis. The vast majority of movies failed the “climate reality check” proposed by the authors, who surveyed 250 movies from 2013 to 2022.
The test is simple — the authors looked to see if a movie presented a story in which climate change exists, and whether a character knows it does. One film that passed the test was the 2017 superhero movie “Justice League, " in which Jason Momoa’s Aquaman character says, “Hey, I don’t mind if the oceans rise” to Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne.
But most movies fell short — fewer than 10% of the 250 films passed, and climate change was mentioned in two or more scenes of fewer than 4% of the films. That’s out of touch with a moviegoing public that wants “to see their reality reflected on screen,” said Colby College English professor Matthew Schneider-Mayerson, lead researcher on the study.

We saved the planet back then by just using "Right Guard".
Frankly, I am fed up with media blaming everything on climate change. I do not need Hollywood to chip in too.
It is so predictable, it reminds me of Pravda at its heyday.
By creating them to start with.
If there’s a climate crisis: 1) sell your Malibu home, 2) sell your Hawaiian home, and 3) sell your Martha’s Vineyard home.
The West coast has had the 3 coldest years in 30 years back to back.
The Leninists are all obsessed with promoting “change” at an artificial pace. They don’t care what sort, so long as the perception of it destabilizes the world.
And more gay plot lines! Climate change and buggery will inspire the world to eat more popcorn!
Movies made by people who live in homes with commercial utility meters, homes that require staff, and live lives of travel, high consumption restaurants and hotels, drivers, impulses of tearing down 30 year old mansions to build new apartment building size mansions, yachts and vacations that involves world travel.
Even their work is high consumption, they don’t work in a recycling center or repairing old homes, or picking up garbage.
Hollywood movies? What are those? Hollyweird is DEAD!
Sorry, but what does this mean? Never heard of such a thing.
Oh, BS. Practically any streaming provider...Netflix, Hulu, Tubi, Prime, etc...is a veritable minefield of climate crisis movies. You have to pick & chose carefully if you don't want to see a movie detailing how mankind has devastated Mother Gaia.
Of course climate change has to be central to the story if you’re making a movie set in past centuries. The Elizabethans were just all about climate change, everybody knows that.
“who live in homes with commercial utility meters”
I’m guessing these are homes that require more than your standard 150/200 amp panels? Maybe a gazillion-amp panel to handle the mansions-worth of bedrooms, bathrooms, amenities, etc? Homes...or utility bills...we can’t afford?
I’m pretty sure ansel is referring to their enormous consumption of electricity.
I can't seem to find a movie to watch where the dancing monkeys are not screeching about "da erf".
For the love of mike, you have big lizard beating on big bugs. Shut the heck up about the climate changing. The entire concept is based on the idea that they both come from a time when the earth was different.
People don’t go to movies to be preached at and brainwashed.
They go for entertainment.
Stop already with the propaganda.
That should make Hollywood crap even less watchable.
