SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico congressional representative Jenniffer González [R] defeated Gov. Pedro Pierluisi [D] in a surprise upset during a primary election held Sunday by their pro-statehood party.

The two ran on the same ticket four years ago under the New Progressive Party, but González, a Republican, announced her plan to challenge Pierluisi, a Democrat, in early December. Public jabs between the two turned acrimonious during the campaign.

Puerto Rico’s main political parties are divided by the island’s political status, so it’s common to find both Republicans and Democrats within the same party.

Puerto Rico has not re-elected a governor since the 1990s. Jennifer Gonzalez is set to become the second Republican governor of the last 20 years. The people are fed up with the usual political parties which all lean left, except for an upstart party called "Dignity Project" which is both socially and fiscally conservative, which is a novelty in PR and is doing very well. We now have four competitive political parties on the island.

Hispanics (non-immigrant, native Hispanic Americans like Puerto Ricans and Southwesteners) are trending conservative. You should embrace that.

Yes,that’s what they say. Assuming it’s true it means that rather than voting 95%-5% for the Rat Party candidate they vote 85%-15%.

A PR conservative of today is politically a 1990s styled Democrat.

Correct!!!

P.R. should declare its independence and go it alone, but they will need to invite China and Russia in to help it become another pain in the ssa to the U.S. and the other islands in the region, and to south and central America. P.R. could become the leader country in the western hemisphere, if allowed to be free of the cumbersome government in the U.S. With the U.S. trending towards third-world status, P.R. could take the lead in being anti-America.

Viva la libertad!

If Javier Milei gets contagious PR would be ripe to follow. We should push them out. China encroaches we deport those in the US. Corruption will never end there.

Corruption is already rampant in the U.S., and it's become a way of life for many, including those in power.

China is seen as a savior to many countries, and it will become more relevant to many countries, small and larger. Deportation of Chinese nationals will never occur, and they'll be seen as victims, which nobody (not even republicans) will dare to have happen.

Unless the U.S. sees the error of its ways, there are many other countries willing to take its place.

Nobody on the island, except for a few fringe leftist Castro fanboys want independence for PR.

Puerto Ricans are Americans and have shed their blood to defend this country.

I didn't say that should be independent. If they were China would surely move in. The current situation is best...no Senators or Reps...and no Chinese naval or air bases.

PR has one of the oddest political arrangements of any polity on earth: the PNP (“Pay-Nay-Pays”) are rooted in the old island Republican Party but today include a coalition of Democrats and Republicans across the political spectrum who support statehood so politicans effectively belong to two parties. There is no “conservative” party in PR per se, although most conservatives are in the PNP vs the PRD. (CLL i know you know this but Freepers need to be reminded from time to time about such things).

Have to ask the wife’s tio and tia how they feel about this.

“Hispanics (non-immigrant, native Hispanic Americans like Puerto Ricans and Southwesteners) are trending conservative. You should embrace that.”

We went through that ‘natural conservative’ fantasy on FR several years ago. It got quite acrimonious. Didn’t pan out. Free sh*t wins every time.

The real idiots are those that don't understand where I'm coming from with my comments. Think again.

A hint: I fought in a war for the U.S. and I'm proud of it.

I didn't say that should be independent.

There are many here on FR who don't want P.R. statehood, There are many here who also want P.R. to go independent. There are also far too many here and elsewhere who have no idea about what would happen in P.R. and surrounding areas, if P.R. decided to go independent.

My previous comments were meant to shed a little bit of light about what could happen, which in fact has occurred in countries in Africa and S. America, and Asia and even parts of Europe.

Jennifer Gonzalez is set to become the second Republican governor of the last 20 years.

Not sure where one gets that conclusion just based on the above article. These were primary elections and there were 2 parties holding primaries with 3 uncontested primaries and one independent.

So the November ballot will have six candidates on it (unless someone drops out).

Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana Javier Córdova Iturregui (appears to be an ultra liberal group), most of the listed campaign events are in NYC.

Partido Independentista Puertoriqueño former island Senator Juan Dalmau • also Alianza de País

Partido Nuevo Progresista Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón • aka Jenniffer González

Partido Popular Democrático island Representative Jesús Manuel Ortiz González • aka Jesús M. Ortiz

Proyecto Dignidad San Sebastian Mayor Javier Jimenez (Today he is the candidate for Governor for the only conservative party in Puerto Rico, Proyecto Dignidad for the 2024 elections.)

Independent Victor Medina (is not running much of a campaign. Only has a Facebook page which he last posted on December 23, 2023.)

None seem to be running on the statehood/independence issue as their website make no mention of it.
