Sen. Joe Manchin leaves the Democratic Party and registers as an independent Manchin's decision, after years of bucking party leadership, could allow him to run for governor or try for another Senate term this fall after ruling out doing so as a Democrat.

IN WV the rumor is Manchin will be trying to get the WVU Prez gig.

In other words, Manchin is still a Democrat.
They are the Democrat Party.
There is nothing democratic about it.

There are lots of Dems who run as Independents. But they still vote with the Dems.

I know people that know Manchin. He’s been wanting to run for Prez for some time. He doesn’t want to accept his time if he ever had one has come and gone. Another WV view is he’s trying to run for his Senate seat via the local very leftist 3rd party the Mountain Party. All he will do is make the Rat nominee loser by a greater amount. I guess the Rat nominee could drop out. It still wouldn’t make any difference. Manchin has the Rat nominee still polled poorly against the GOP nominee Gov Justice.

He did this to run for Senate or Gov as Indy in WVa and split GOP vote and elect a Dem.
How will this affect the balance of power in the Senate?
He is an attention addict.
Manchin for years pretended to be a moderate for election purposes. 90% of the time he voted as a liberal democrat. He is a liberal democrat. West Virginia finally woke up and decided he is to be no more. That is why he is not running for re-election. He knows he will lose.
