Spunky what is the reason on back fusion/smoking?
Just curious
I decided no to back surgery a long time ago. 95!% of people I know didn’t get relief and in many cases worse(my brother, 2 cousins, several friends)
My brother had total 6 surgeries to get where he’s at now. He is very active ( wife and he walk 2Xs day total 5-7 miles. Extensive travel where lots of walking challenges. He’s 71
I was so hopeful when I heard how wonderful MsB felt. Maybe help for me?

Short answer his orthopedic surgeon gave him is it effects the healing and he didn’t want to take the risk.

Good grief.....weather in the ninety’s, age only about ten years lower....lol I would never expect an older gal, no matter how much of a go-getter, to expose themselves to those temps.
I was just out on the deck because I’ve been in the air-conditioning so much. I was just sitting and doing the final sewing up on Audrey’s new sweater to go back to school in the fall (lol they just got out of school two days ago) and I couldn’t stand it. We’re at 86 but feels like 100. Humid. Yuck.
Add the driving, the early leaving on top of the heat....you’d be crazy to go!

Because they can’t put me down deep enough to fuse the vertebrae or I would suffocate, from smoking for so long..
This is also the reason why they could not replace my hip, but instead, could only fix the damage.
God is infinite in his mercy, as my hip was ‘an impact driven fracture, and could be repaired.
It did NOT break in two, like a lot of hips do.
I have been through so much...

Anesthesia is a tremendous strain on the respiratory system, even in healthy non- smokers.
Also,if there is not enough oxygen in your blood, it will take longer for healing, thus raising the risks on infection.
As stated in my previous post, mine are so bad (lungs) that
the surgeon only kept me under long enough to place some screws around the fracture.
When a broken hip is treated with a replacement, the “OWIE”
is taken out, so no more pain from that!
Mine had to heal from the fracture organically.
Well, better a bit than never!
