Self checkout : just walk out with your stuff.....
One of the Safeways in San Francisco that has self checkout has recently added like a plexiglass barrier to exit from the self checkout section. You’re supposed to scan your receipt to open the barrier, kind of like the fare gate at a subway station. Well, poor old yours truly, so used to a barrier not being there, didn’t even notice it the first time and walked right into it carrying a couple of grocery bags.
Not only are stores today removing self-checkouts but they’re removing all the courtesy exits.
I guess I’m lucky.
I go to a store that sacks

car. Though I do tip
them.
I hate shopping at Walmart.

And this all started because they wanted to automate jobs!
Safeway Removes Self-checkout kiosks from some Bay Area stores
I thought SF declared that if the total of your bill was under $900 it was free? Were the machines unable to do the math correctly?
In today’s episode of “how 13% of a nation’s population is enough to destroy the rest of it” …
Translation: We don’t want to prosecute shoplifters so we will try to make it harder for them.
Not going to work
Every store in San Francisco is self-checkout. At least for 13% of the population.
Yay for them. Since I do not work in any of these such stores I refuse to check out my own stuff. Might, if they offered a +10% discount.
I’ve told store clerks/etc that if I come in and only self-checkout is available I will drop my selected items there and walk out — and get everything from Amazon from then on.
There’s just a big empty space where the self-checkout kiosks used to be.
There are also marks on the floor where the machines used to sit.
In their place is a display of orange soda cans
I expect that in the not too distant future, stores will return to the 19th/early 20th century practice where customers will pull their wagon (vehicle) up to a loading dock and hand a clerk their list. The clerk will assemble their purchase, and after receiving payment, load it in the wagon (vehicle).
There will be no need for the customer to enter the establishment and no risk of theft.
I want to go back to waiting in line while the woman ahead of me and the checker discuss her grandkid’s new tooth or we wait for the manager to approve a check. Or I wait with a half gallon of milk while the person in front of me has 200 items. I like self check at Walmart and Stater Bros. And i never wait in line. The question i have is with two employees in the self check area how much money is the store actually saving?
In order for self-checkout to work, you have to have a high-trust society. As long as you have any significant percentage of blacks or hispanics in your population, you can’t have that.
[Safeway officials said they’re removing the kiosks because of problems with theft – too many customers steal items when they go through the self-checkout.]
This is 100% true. Everywhere.
Walmart in Porter Ranch, Calif shuts the self check out by 4pm.
