OAKLAND, Calif. - Shoppers at some Bay Area Safeway stores will no longer have the option to use self-checkout kiosks.
The grocery chain confirmed to KTVU that it's getting rid of the self-checkout machines at several stores, although they wouldn't specify which ones.
Safeway officials said they're removing the kiosks because of problems with theft – too many customers steal items when they go through the self-checkout.
"Operational changes have been made at select stores throughout the Bay Area given the increasing amount of theft," according to Safeway's statement. "Self-checkout kiosks have been removed at a few stores. Like other local businesses, we are working on ways to curtail escalating theft so we can ensure the well-being of our employees and foster a welcoming environment for our customers."
The Safeway on Pleasant Valley Road in Oakland removed them earlier this month.
There's just a big empty space where the self-checkout kiosks used to be.
There are also marks on the floor where the machines used to sit.
In their place is a display of soda cans.
And this store isn't the only one.

Self checkout : just walk out with your stuff.....
One of the Safeways in San Francisco that has self checkout has recently added like a plexiglass barrier to exit from the self checkout section. You’re supposed to scan your receipt to open the barrier, kind of like the fare gate at a subway station. Well, poor old yours truly, so used to a barrier not being there, didn’t even notice it the first time and walked right into it carrying a couple of grocery bags.
Not only are stores today removing self-checkouts but they’re removing all the courtesy exits.
I guess I’m lucky.
I go to a store that sacks
your groceries and
rolls the cart to your
car. Though I do tip
them.
I hate shopping at Walmart.
Where do you live, the 1950s??
trust is a precious thing....
More importantly, do the 1950s have any homes available?
Market Street in DFW does that.
Stores are clean, well stocked, great variety, and helpful staff. Most shoppers are courteous and considerate
You pay a little more but it makes shopping effortless (heck, grocery prices are out of control no matter where you go - thanks, Biden!). No psychos on the checkout line, no rummaging for what you need, no improperly dressed foul mouth trolls blocking the aisles.
How many milliseconds after this story broke did the DemoMarxist domestic enemies call it racist?
And this all started because they wanted to automate jobs!
No, not the ‘50’s.
A small town in the last
bastion of conservatisim
in a blue state.
Being in competion with
Walmart and Albertsons,
this store has figured out
a way to remain competitive.
They cater to their hometown
base, and they’re always
busy. And there’s two in
town.
Safeway Removes Self-checkout kiosks from some Bay Area stores
I did see a story that SF is considering a law that would require grocery stores give a 6 month notice before they close. So stores can be robbed for an additional 6 months.
I do not know if it was passed or not or just proposed.
If passed, there is no reason for a store not to pull the majority of its stock and just leave a few cans here and there or maybe some nearly expired produce and a skeleton crew.
I thought SF declared that if the total of your bill was under $900 it was free? Were the machines unable to do the math correctly?
In today’s episode of “how 13% of a nation’s population is enough to destroy the rest of it” …
Oops! How embarrassing. Still, that barrier should be better designed. The customer shouldn’t be put in that spot of dropping merchandise all over and possibly losing their balance.
What are you defining as a courtesy exit or is that a euphemism for theft?
Publix? They do that, and its a nice touch in this day and age.
Translation: We don’t want to prosecute shoplifters so we will try to make it harder for them.
Not going to work
