Nation Building’s Last Stand in Gaza
Sultan Knish ^ | 27 May 2024 | Daniel Greenfield

Rafah isn’t just the last stand for Hamas, but for an entire foreign policy establishment.

The desperate effort to keep Israeli soldiers from going into the last Gaza stronghold of the Islamic terrorist organization is about more than the sum of the geopolitical parts.

After nation building failed in Afghanistan and Iraq, and everywhere else it’s been tried, the radioactive ‘Palestinian’ nation building experiment from over 30 years ago is its last hope.

Long before George W. Bush tackled nation building after 9/11, his father began the era of turning Muslim terrorist groups into countries with the project to give the PLO a state. Where the first Bush failed, Bill Clinton succeeded with the Oslo accords and a Nobel prize for Arafat.

The PLO state failed long before Iran took over Iraq and the Taliban took over Afghanistan. There had never been anything peaceful, democratic or aspirational about Arafat and the PLO. By the time that Hamas had captured Gaza after winning democratic elections, it had long been clear to everyone outside of D.C. that rather than ending terrorism, statehood had incarnated it.

Any ‘Palestinian’ state was doomed to be a terrorist state. The only question is who would run it. And the answer was that the biggest and deadliest terrorists would command popular support.

After WW2 there was hope. Germany and Japan threw away their authoritarian tendencies and flowered as liberal democracies. What differentiates them from Iraq, Afghanistan, and for that matter Russia, which when their totalitarian governments fall or are are thrown down revert as quickly as possible back to the old way? Think that through. Is it genetic, even?

Is it genetic, even?

No, it is not genetic. Both Germany and Japan evolved into parliamentary democracies between 1870 and 1925. I have also seen it stated that the countries that had the best experience after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact all had a legitimate election (as viewed by the local population) between 1920 and 1939.

I thought Iraq had a chance, but that would have required keeping an elected government in place viewed as legitimate by the Iraqis for 30 to 40 years. See the experience of both South Korea and Taiwan, Single party dictatorships in 1960, by 1990 despite some uncomfortable and not entirely bloodless political upheaval both are multiparty democracies.

The Palestinian State was doomed from the start because Bill and Hillary Clinton forced Israel to allow Yasser Arafat and the PLO to be the leadership of the new state.

Yasser Arafat and the PLO were a criminal international terrorist organization with more in common with the Mafia than a legit government.

More importantly , very few in the PLO had any real connection to the land Palestine and were free booting terrorist mercenaries from places like Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon funded by Soviet money to stir up trouble in the West.

Had Israel been able to work with people who were actually residents of the territories who had a vested interest in Peace and stability as opposed to Yasser Arafat and his PLO which had a vested interesting in terrorism, anarchy and criminality things would have been much different. .

if you think about it, most of the worlds problems and strife are the results of 4 people - Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barak Obama and Joe Biden. It's really hard to tell which one was worse.

This is not nation buildings last stand. It’s a grand part of the military industrial complex where those not selling guns or using them get to build things to be given to those that win those money making wars.

As long as there is money to be made by nation building it will go on. The only way to stop it is by overhauling the govt, which is what Trump wants to do.

There are so many reasons why the left fears Trump I actually worry about his safety.

We still have the Ukraine.

Meanwhile the US is being rebuilt into something other than American.

The point of the IDF killing off of Hamas is to cleanse politically.

A new nation will be formed by the coalition of Abraham Accord members that will resolve all the old insoluble problems. The coalition will create what amounts to a protectorate governed by the coalition until such time as it is deemed cleansed of Hamas and the PLA

President Trump will lend a strong hand but not Taxpayer money. That will come from the zakat guilt funds from the Arabs.

No, it is not genetic......

You wrote a thoughtful answer Fraxinus, and I don't disagree with any of it, except while those national histories might be taken show that success is genetic, they don't show that failure is not. Datum: all those nations have ethnically homogeneous populations.

Now take Iraq....Sunni and Shia, Arabs and Kurds, all involuntarily mashed together within boundaries drawn by some British foreign-office weenie who quite possibly had never crossed the Channel. Could there ever have been a stable democratic government there?

We still have the Ukraine.

???? What are you suggesting? That the West is "nation building" in Ukraine? More like nation preserving. Ukraine was well on its' way to being a Western liberal democracy in 2014, despite Russian efforts to subvert it. The war broke out only when Putin's efforts failed.

Are you suggesting you care more about the Ukraine than the US? Cause I also said they’re doing more or less the same to the US.

We defeated Nazi Germany pretty thoroughly (firebombing cities, etcetera) and, yes, Occupied it.
We defeated Japan pretty thoroughly (nuking cities, etcetera) and yes, Occupied it.

those tactics worked, at least they’ve worked pretty well from 1945 to 2024. (We will see what the future may bring...)

When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, we didn’t offer it California, Oregon, and Washington as a reward

when Germany overran most of Europe and bombed London, we didn’t offer it New York and Massachusetts as a reward

On the other hand, Britain tried to appease, give concessions to Nazi Germany for several years prior to the outbreak of WW2. Allowing Germany to rebuild its air force. Allowing Germany to substantially increase the size of its navy from that set by the Treaty of Versailles. Allowing Germany to invade and occupy part of Czechoslovakia. Along with USA, allowing, along and facilitating and financing the re-industrialization of Germany including heavy steel, auto, rail, many more concessions, attempts at appeasement. it all worked to enable Nazi Germany to become the strongest nation in Europe...and to win the first couple of years when it launched WW2.

We need to let the IDF eliminate the threats and stop defending and resupplying the (Nazi-style) Arab terrorists

The amusing thing is the Zeeper neocon nit wit like yourself thought "nation building" was a good idea in Ukraine, where fomented an illegal, installed a puppet government and setoff a civil war.

Or is nation building only good when the defense industry and our political elite can make money off it?

We are so far away from Reagan's foreign policy, which had the objective of freeing people in the rest of the world from tyranny.
