How does this end? With Hamas holding firm and fighting back in Gaza, Israel faces only bad options

Diminished but not deterred, Hamas is still putting up a fight after seven brutal months of war with Israel, regrouping in some of the hardest-hit areas in northern Gaza and resuming rocket attacks into nearby Israeli communities.

Israel initially made tactical advances against Hamas after a devastating aerial bombardment paved the way for its ground troops. But those early gains have given way to a grinding struggle against an adaptable insurgency — and a growing feeling among many Israelis that their military faces only bad options, drawing comparisons with U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They supported Israel’s retaliation for Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, including one of the heaviest bombing campaigns in recent history, ground operations that obliterated entire neighborhoods and border restrictions that the U.N.'s World Food Program says pushed parts of the territory into famine.

But now the two retired generals fear a prolonged, costly re-occupation of Gaza, from which Israel withdrew soldiers and settlers in 2005. They are also opposed to a withdrawal that would leave Hamas in control or lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Instead, they have put forth alternatives that many Israelis see as wildly unrealistic. Hamas, meanwhile, has proposed its own postwar plan.

I think the Israeli plan was to just make Gaza uninhabitable, and force everybody to emigrate.

Nobody wants them. Not after what happened in Jordan and Lebanon.

Their best bet is probably USA and Canada. But that depends on whether Biden and Trudeau will get reelected.

We shall see. I think that the Israel public is unified behind Netanyahu for now, even if they may want him out once Hamas is subdued.

Correctly assessed. IDF will put an end to the Hamas nightmare that began in 2004 with the handover of farm and flower producers employing 10,000 Palestinians, who destroyed over night all those jobs.

Hamas is a cancer. The UN a cesspool of Islamic hate.

Hamas is simply one branch of NAZI leftists who will be run out of Israel.

They don't like him. But they know they can't depend on anyone else to take on Hamas right now.

Grozny had tunnels as well. Not as many as Gaza, but enough to be a problem.

In 1999 the Russians tactics consisted of mostly giving people just enough time to clear a building, then destroying it with thermobarics, even if they didn’t evacuate.

Gaza population is approx 5x Grozny which is another problem.

I support Israel, but I thought based on Grozny that they were risking large losses in urban warfare. And now that’s what it looks like.

Israel's army can easily cut up the Gaza strip into sections, and to the extent necessary isolate and eliminate any opposition.

Yes, they can. In Gaza. But in so doing, they may create a few hundred million more opposition outside of Gaza.

The British had a plan to eliminate opposition in Northern Ireland in 1971. They started internment. They just rounded up suspicious characters and stuck them in prison. No charges, no trial, no release date. It was effective in taking opponents, such as suspected IRA members, off the street. What could possibly go wrong? It acted as the greatest recruiting campaign for the IRA, etc.

Exterminate the Arab presence in Gaza and it may invite muslims worldwide to oppose Israel. They only outnumber them by over 1,000 to 1, and in comparison, Israel is a minipower.

As a previous apartheid regime, South Africa showed, it does not require a military effort if near total shunning and divestiture can be achieved.

It was not easy, but Israel actually lost the war of public support to Palestine. That is a special sort achievement all in itself. Who could have foreseen international sympathy for the Palestinians?

In that case, all the Jews living in Israel should emigrate to Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.

After all, Hamas will just conquer Israel.

You think the US will take them?

It will be the SS St. Louis on steroids.

Stop sending aid to Hamas via Palestinians. They are one and the same. How many weapons are being sent in through Biden’s port?

Nope...

With Israel holding firm and advancing in Gaza, Hamas faces only bad options

Defining moment for Israel. They should not stop until HAMAS is totally obliterated not only in Gaza but everywhere they are found. Remorseless retribution should be the order of the day.

Nope. Not this time.

They made a fatal mistake.

These Jews aren’t turning the other cheek.
This is just the start.

I think this is going to turn out to be similar to what the Israelis did after Munich. They’re going to kill or destroy anything or one associated with that October 7 massacre.

Not one country in the Mideast wants Palestinian refugees. Hopefully Israel will use the Carthaginian solution to rid the world of these cockroaches.

Of course not. They're not stupid.

Maybe Trudeau will take them in.
