Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) slammed Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for an American flag that flew upside down at his Virginia home in 2021, saying that despite tensions reportedly running high in the neighborhood at the time, it was “not good judgment” on Alito’s part.
“Emotions are apparently high in that neighborhood,” Graham told reporters Monday. “But no, it’s not good judgment to do that. He said his wife was insulted and got mad. I assume that to be true, but he’s still a Supreme Court justice, and people have to realize that [at] moments like that to think it through.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee’s ranking member delivered the criticism of the conservative justice following a report from The New York Times last week, featuring a photo of the flag flying upside down outside Alito’s home.

A lot of people, including quite a few on FR, seem to think that it’s OK to disrespect the flag as long as it’s done out of self-perceived patriotic motives. Strange logic.

I’ll have to look up my OLD flag book, but IIRC it simply states “distress”. Not “physical danger” or any real specifics. Now, I always interpreted that as severe political danger, as in they’re taking over NOW.
So my view has been it’s simply perhaps too glibly used to indicate some kind of distress. Indeed this is minor and so should really not be used for personal “danger” calls. But Idont necessarily see it as the equal of tearing down the flag and stomping it into the ground, or burning, etc. as I stated it’s maybe about the same level as constantly lowering the flag which is done far too much nowadays by people in power.
Same in Maryland. Of course we’re known for being lib.
Our current typical Dem gov and our last RINO gov and all since 9/11 do this a lot. If they can’t lower the US flag they’ll have every state and lesser flag half staff.
Neither is having an erect penis inserted in your mouth or anus, Lindsey.
We need to start a group to get these presidents and so on to cut it out. Get back to the old days instead of constantly showing our pathetic vulnerability.

Traditionally, displaying the flag inverted was always used to signify a request for aid in the face of actual physical danger, such as a ship sinking or an attack by hostile forces. I think there was a more rigorous definition of distress in those days, not just unhappiness with the political situation. Why would it ever have become customary to use the flag to protest against itself? There are other ways to express political dissatisfaction.
I believe that the flag should not be flown upside down unless the situation is such that a person would also call 911 if possible.
I agree that as forms of disrespect go, improper display is one of the milder ones, but it’s still disrespectful. I also agree that lowering the flag to half-staff is done for trivialities much of the time now.
I just can’t compete with your rapier-like wit.
