Experts say coral reef bleaching near record level globally because of 'crazy' ocean heat
AP via MSN ^ | May 16, 2024 | Seth Borenstein

Ocean temperatures that have gone “crazy haywire” hot, especially in the Atlantic, are close to making the current global coral bleaching event the worst in history. It's so bad that scientists are hoping for a few hurricanes to cool things off.

More than three-fifths — 62.9% — of the world's coral reefs are badly hurting from a bleaching event that began last year and is continuing. That's nearing the record of 65.7% in 2017, when from 2009 to 2017 about one-seventh of the world's coral died, said Derek Manzello, coordinator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coral Reef Watch Program.

When water gets too hot, coral, which are living creatures, bleach and sometimes die.

In the Atlantic, off the Florida coast and in the Caribbean, about 99.7% of the coral reefs have been hit with "very very severe'' losses in staghorn and elkhorn species, Manzello said Thursday in NOAA's monthly climate briefing. Sixty-two countries are seeing damaged coral, with Thailand shutting off a tourist-laden island to try to save the coral there.

“This wouldn't be happening without climate change. …But on top of that are changes in El Nino, the reverse of La Nina and a natural warming of ocean waters; reduced sulfur pollution from ships and an undersea volcano eruption.

Former top NASA climate scientist James Hansen said “acceleration of global warming is now hard to deny" in a new analysis and statement Thursday.

For coral, it comes down to how hot the water is and “things have just gone crazy haywire with ocean temperatures in the last year,” Manzello said. He said hurricanes bring up cool water from deep and benefit coral reefs if they don't hit them directly.

“This wouldn't be happening without climate change. That's basically the cornerstone of all the ocean warming we're seeing,” Manzello said. But on top of that are changes in El Nino, the reverse of La Nina and a natural warming of ocean waters; reduced sulfur pollution from ships and an undersea volcano eruption.

Former top NASA climate scientist James Hansen said “acceleration of global warming is now hard to deny" in a new analysis and statement Thursday.

How do we reduce sulfur pollution from undersea volcanos?

James Hansen is one of the first people to make public statements about "global warming" in the late 80's. He's one of the people who started the climate hysteria.

This is from Seth Borenstein, the biggest liar in the history of the AP. This puke has been stating crap like this for long as I can remember. Oh and James Hansen (hockey stick guy) in the same article as the same fraudsters get together once again.

These morons must believe that our Sun, solar system, Milky Way Galaxy and of course the Universe has been static for over 13 billion years. And of course Earth has also been stagnant for a few billion years.

They should both be in prison for fraud.

Here’s the thing. There are millions of organisms in a reef. They are optimized for different conditions and different temperature ranges. (Note I said ranges.) The temperature goes up so a class of organisms that top out at the old temperature will die off. This assumes the report isn’t just a bunch of hogwash. Organisms that have a higher tolerance will proliferate. There may be a period where the reef is apparently dead as the other organisms take hold and proliferate. But in a few years, the old organisms will be replaced, and the reef will be just fine. One wonders how much of this hysteria is predicated on the study grant reaching its end. Because it’s a “global warming” grant the resulting report had better mention global warming, or at least “climate change” several times for the grant to be reestablished for the coming year.

I have to admit, if I had someone paying me to spend a career playing around coral reefs, I’d probably play the game to keep the money flowing...just sayin’.

There was widespread bleaching in the reefs around south Florida, but a very quiet report came out a year later that the color had returned. It’s almost as if bleaching is a defense mechanism that coral, a living creature, uses to prevent death? Nah, couldn’t possibly be that. We’re definitely killing the oceans.

Remember when the Great Barrier Reef was supposedly dying?

Then it had a huge spurt in coral growth. This is just more hysterical propaganda from the Gaia Worshipers.

Agree speaking if underreported events volcanos emitting toxic gasses above and under the oceans get little mention it doesn’t fit their agenda of fear speak.

Yes the earth has been slowly warming in fits and starts since the Little Ice Age, but nothing to justify these misleading and usually fraudulent stories of measurable consequences. The AP especially has become the “experts” but experts at fear porn only.

The temperature of the oceans is determined by the earth itself, not its atmosphere.

I just read not to long ago that this reef bleaching is bullsh!t, article was from a reputable Marine Biologist.
