'Watching history happen': Minnesota's redesigned flag raised at State Capitol

In a solemn, pre-dawn ceremony, the flag that's been flying over Minnesota's State Capitol for decades was lowered for the last time.

Voices hushed in a crowd of more than a dozen onlookers at 5 a.m. on Saturday as the flag with Civil War-era imagery was carefully carried from the darkened Capitol rooftop to the building's front steps, where two National Guard members folded it into a tri-cornered shape and presented it to the state's Historical Society for preservation.

As the sun rose, a new official banner was hoisted on the same flagpole overlooking St. Paul, a stripped-down design featuring distinct state symbols that supporters hope all Minnesotans can identify with for at least 100 years to come.

I’m sure most will get over it. Can you get outraged over every little thing. It’s a state flag. One of 50. Most have no idea what their own flag looks like. States rights are not just for when convenient.

If Minnesota is serious about importing fake history, let me send up Florida's recently minted anthem, “Florida, Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky.”

Florida does not need or want the little ditty thought up by former rino, democrat, independent Charlie Crist in 2008 and promptly discarded because it was - well, sad and dreary.

Let's just cram all the national embarrassments into the gopher state.
