A powerful solar storm will make the northern lights visible to most of America — including the New York City area — Friday night, but you’ll need to get out of the city if you want a chance at seeing the auroras.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has upgraded the looming geomagnetic solar storm to a level 4, which is capable of disrupting America’s electrical grid and making the northern lights visible as far south as Alabama.
The key to witnessing the natural phenomena will depend on the amount of cloud coverage and light population, making upstate New York or Long Island the best bet for city dwellers.

There is a wildlife management area not too far from me with a parking lot but no lights, and mostly open area around a large pond. Should be good, as the forecast is “mostly clear” with very little haze, apparently no fog. It is pretty unusual to get good viewing conditions in the mid-South USA this time of year, much less an aurora visible well south of I-64.

Class 5 is nothing to sneeze at.
But how much, what colors are you seeing with your eyes?
I see them all the time but just brightly glowing moving green and white curtains. From time to time Mrsmaws friends post pictures of “the Northern Lights” but its not really any such thing. Sometimes there is just this slightly glowing white cloud floating by and when they take pictures using their Apple gear it glows multicolored like a rainbow.

Steve Lookner on Agenda Free TV, just said that you might be able to see something if you take a picture, even if you can’t see it with the naked eye. He captured a green sky (I think he’s in Atlanta):

Saw it not long ago in South Alabama. I’m 10 minutes from the Florida border, for reference. It was pretty amazing to see, especially this far south!

The aurora has apparently been visible in Florida and South Texas.
And where would that be?
My daughter in Portland ME says it’s partly cloudy there and she can see it. She’s going to try to get pictures of it.
It looks like most of the NE is overcast.

Still light here in northern Idaho. I’m eagerly awaiting the zombie apocalypse. There’s going to be a zombie apocalypse, isn’t there? Come on, I was promised a zombie apocalypse, not lights in the sky. Oh, well...
We were just outside looking at them south of Nashville. Here’s a tip. Use your phone camera to look. What looked like a little haze, or a contrail was actually bright pink, blue and green auroras! Take a picture and the colors are brighter!
We are in Georgia and could see it! I took some gorgeous pictures. Even if you think you can’t see anything, take a picture of the sky to the north of you. Your camera will pick up what the naked eye cannot see.
