Earth could suffer the worst solar storm in 165 years as six streams of plasma that erupted from the sun this week are set to make crash into our atmosphere tonight.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revealed Friday that the worst-case scenario would be what happened during the 1859 Carrington event, which set telegraph stations on fire, cutting communications worldwide.
In our modern-day society a geomagnetic storm - a major disturbance of Earth's magnetosphere- of that magnitude would cause widespread electrical disruptions, blackouts and damage to critical infrastructure.

Well, I guess there’s not much we can do about it, is there? Tonight is pretty near...
Should read “Hold on to your butts”
I believe that the Carrington Event disruption — including terrestrial fires — occurred as a result of the high-energy particles that arrive with 20 minutes of the flare/CME, not the lower energy stuff that arrives days later, like tonight. So any great drama would have happened already but it didn’t. Enjoy the Aurora.

Looks like it will be pretty big. Although the forecast doesn’t extend out long enough to show if it will still be big at nightime over the USA to see the aurora.
@ post six. LOL!
Last Sunday my son and I were at the Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles. They have a cool sun telescope that projects a sun image about two feet in diameter. I’d never seen so many sunspots (we are near the peak of the eleven year cycle). There was one HUGE sunspot, many times the size of earth, in the center of the sun. On another projection we could actually faintly see flares on the sun’s outer disk. Our guide said the sun was very active right now.
Our band has a gig tonight. I wonder if I should not plug into my amp. 🤔👍
Worst in 165 years. I remember that. GPS and the Internet were down for weeks.
Just don’t touch any metal..............
Spaceweather.com reports that the first of possibly 6 Coronal Mass Ejections has already hit the earth.
I’m regretting that we didn’t shell out for the Bluetti on our wish list, yet...
Wear rubber gloves while you’re playing.
Well, so far, we’re still ‘here’...
