School board in Virginia votes to restore Confederate names

The education board for a rural Virginia county voted early on Friday to restore the names of Confederate generals stripped from two schools in 2020, making the mostly white, Republican district the first in the U.S. to take such an action.

By a 5-1 vote, the Shenandoah County board overturned its 2020 decision that stripped a public high school and elementary school of their original names honoring three military leaders of the pro-slavery South in the Civil War.

Under the board's action, Mountain View High School will again become known as Stonewall Jackson High, while Honey Run Elementary School will revert to the name Ashby Lee Elementary.

The names belong to some of the most well-known military leaders of the Confederacy. Robert E. Lee was commander of the Army of Northern Virginia; Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was a Confederate infantry general, and Turner Ashby was a rebel cavalry commander. All of them were Virginians.

Wr went over this before. Democrats became a Big Government Party starting with Bryan. GOP Presidents from Grnt to McKinley WERE not for big government. TR was, but not Taft, Harding and Cooldidge. Indeed, BOTH Parties have been for too Big Governmemt for a Long time. That is our problem. You said the South wanted governent funds that means big government. 1913 was the real year that hurt the ID badly, not 1861.

***The choice Lincoln put them to was to fire to drive an invader away, or not fire and be occupied without defending themselves***

It comes down to 'independence' and 'defending slavery'. Independence brings up the subject of states' rights, which Lincoln pretty much obliterated; the South became a plundered war zone for decades.

Slavery almost certainly would have declined over the next half a century anyway; historically that institution was destined to minimalize.

Who can say what the outcome would have been if Lincoln had not decided his principles merited spending the lives of tens of thousands of people. Depending on ones POV, Lincoln was either a stalwart or a monster. As I say, historians write the text of any story.

Yes they wanted to be left in peace. They offered to pay their portion of the national debt and they offered free passage of the Mississippi. They only invaded Pennsylvania AFTER the federal government invaded their territory. Once you're in a war, you're going to fight back.

There were 11....arguably 12 with Missouri. I never said it was "just" the Upper South. You Lincoln apologists and your bullshit attempts to deny the Corwin Amendment....

Listen PCer. The Southern states seceded to gain their independence to set their own tariffs and get out from under the rule of Imperial Washington. Lincoln started the war by invading South Carolina's sovereign territory.

Facts are Facts. All your ignorant ramblings will not change history. GROW UP!

A Declaration by men who owned slaves and who were seceding from the country they had sworn allegiance too. A Declaration that declared that government derives its just power from the consent of the governed. Might does not make right.

huh? They left the US not fought against the government? You mean the Founding Fathers who left the British Empire and did fight against the government? You mean the Southerners who left the US and only fought the tyrannical US government because it attacked them seeking to impose its rule on people who did not consent to it?

Not good to honor either slavers or black radical favorites like Trayvon Martin. There are plenty of patriotic, freedom- loving-for-all Americans whose names could have been used.

This is less about honoring confederates and more about pushing back against the radical DEI/BLM wokeness that has been shoved down our throats 24/7 since the Summer of Fentanyl Floyd.

I'd argue it would have declined even faster. Lincoln could have done nothing in which case there is simply no way the original 7 seceding states could have defended a 1500 mile border from the Atlantic Coast of South Carolina all the way to El Paso Texas. With them out and now a separate country, the remaining states of the US would have had no obligation to return their escaped slaves. The result would have been that their slaves - especially the young and fit - ie the most productive ones - would have poured over the border into the US causing the rapid collapse of slavery. Something very much like that happened in Brazil which caused slavery to collapse in 2 years in that country. Lincoln made this argument by the way and nobody could really refute it.

Even if you don't believe this would have doomed slavery fairly quickly, industrialization was wiping out slavery in Western country after country in the 19th century. By 1881, Brazil and Cuba had gotten rid of it and they were the last two. Already 50% of Blacks in Maryland were freedmen. In Virginia 25% of Blacks were. Industrialization was working its way southward already by 1860 and the same process that killed it in the Northern states was going to kill it off in the Southern states too. There's no reason to think that slavery would have held on in the Southern states for 50 or 100 years longer than it held on anywhere else in the West.

Who can say what the outcome would have been if Lincoln had not decided his principles merited spending the lives of tens of thousands of people. Depending on ones POV, Lincoln was either a stalwart or a monster. As I say, historians write the text of any story.

Lincoln claimed he was "saving" the Union and that the Union would be destroyed if the Southern states left. Was that true? Remember that North Carolina, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri were quite content to remain in. The union would still have stretched from Maine to the border of South Carolina and as far Westward as the Pacific. It still would have been a huge country. It just would have been smaller. The idea that there would be Three democratic Anglo countries north of the Rio Grande rather than just two no more horrifies me than the fact that there are two democratic Anglo countries north of the Rio Grande rather than just one.

Are you horrified Canada is not part of the US? Why not? Because you've been taught not to be horrified by the idea. Being part of the US is not what the people of Canada wanted. *shrug*. I'm cool with that. Why should it be any different for the people of the Southern States?

I'd argue that if anything, had the seceding states been allowed to depart in peace, it would have been GOOD for the US. Why? Because with the right of unilateral secession affirmed, it would have prevented the federal government from becoming too oppressive or rapacious toward any single state. They would have always had the option to just leave if they were getting screwed over too badly. That would have been a GOOD thing. That's what the Founding Fathers intended.

You with your excuses always. The facts are, they created the United States, and the Confederate sought to break it apart.

The South was making the North violate it’s Staes Rights by handing back fugitive slaves. The Slave Power was fine using the Fecetal Government for it’s purposes, as soon as it lost power, it threw a hiss fit. And the Confederate Government was far bigger, far more intrusive. Freeper LS is a very respected historian and he writes about this.

I would argue it started well after Bryan. Grant did nothing to curtail federal pork going to big business. In fact it got even worse under his administration. By the time of Harding and Coolidge, Republicans had mostly cooled it on massive government handouts to big business though they were perfectly willing to go fight several small wars in the Caribbean and Latin America on behalf of major corporations.

FDR was the first really really big government type from the Democrat party. The South supported him because A) he was a Democrat and they sure as hell were not going to support Republicans after the way the Republican party had treated them and B) FDR was THE first president who put more federal money into the South than he took out of the South. Literally. THE first one. By then the South had been reduced from being the richest section of the country to being the poorest. Southerners may not have liked big government but after having money sucked out of their wallets for about 140 years they didn't mind when the money flow from Washington finally reversed itself. I figure we've still got a long long time for that to continue before we can call it even.

So what? If a state wants to leave, let them go. I've had girlfriends break up with me. I didn't knock them over the head, drag them back inside, chain them to the bedpost and then go around telling everybody I had "saved" our relationship. You'd have to be a monster to do that.

You can make that argument....but then don't complain when the Southern states exercise their states' rights to unilaterally secede.

oh and the Confederate government was not bigger than the federal government nor was it more intrusive. That's just a complete joke.
