Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has filed a privileged motion to vacate the chair, forcing the House to vote within two legislative days to eject Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Johnson is expected to immediately move to table – and effectively kill – the motion, a vote which requires a simple majority. Yet House rules do not prohibit Greene, or any other lawmaker, from forcing additional votes, and she and her allies have not tipped their hand as to what they’ll do should the motion be killed.
Further, Johnson’s immediate future, despite assurances from Johnson-friendly media outlets, is far from certain. Some Republicans, including those who will vote against ejecting Johnson, may vote against the tabling motion out of principle. Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) has announced he would do so, although he has not said how he will vote on the motion to vacate itself.
Greene pulled the trigger Wednesday after almost two months of warnings for Johnson to end his coalition government with Democrats during which the endangered Speaker unleashed a torrent of President Joe Biden’s priorities into law.
While long anticipated, the motion’s inevitability seemed to wane this week as Greene and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) met Monday and Tuesday with Johnson for a combined three hours to discuss a path forward. The pair proposed four accountability measures to ensure the Speaker would not advance an agenda opposed by a majority of Republicans, including preventing further American funding of Ukraine’s faraway war.
Johnson had continued to state he was hearing the duo out and considering their proposals while insisting it was “not a negotiation.”
But Tuesday evening, after complaining (yet again) he had not been getting enough sleep, Johnson appeared to let the veil drop, sneering and rolling his eyes when asked if he would give Greene an answer soon.

I can’t keep up with the flurry of subpoenas these republican chairman have issued
yup
vote to vacate
rinse and repeat till 2025
that will keep all of them neutered
hobbel them all
Yes and the opportunity to get rid of him is January 2025. Six months before an election is not the time. Has MTG done the leg work to get a willing speaker and have the vote for a speaker? I bet she doesn’t. It’s easy to complain. Getting the work done to replace a speaker is hard. We’ve seen how difficult it is.
That’s not how this is going to go down at all.
RINOs and Dems are going to vote together to kill this.
I think the vote will be along the lines of 430-5. Maybe. This is hardly the time for this.
They are not going to do that. They are lying. Why would they, when they can have Speaker Jeffries and two or three Assistant Democrats making honest whores of themselves by switching parties?
The Stupid Party falls for rope-a-dope every single time.
As I wrote somewhat inelegantly two days ago...
The one battle that matters the most right now is getting Trump in the White House, and this does nothing to support that effort.
The second battle is closing the border. The third battle is trying to get a GOP majority in the Senate so that, if nothing else, we get conservative judges and justices for the next four years. The fourth battle is keeping Hakeem Jeffries from becoming Speaker in the next congress.
We’ve already ****ed up the House this year, and vacating the Speaker isn’t going to fix ****. So let’s pick the battles that are necessary to win NOW.
“Our side looking like fools again. God help America.”
Ha, ha... you act like this is something new. The Republican establishment wing of the party has been doing this for years (possibly decades).
The country would not be on the path of total destruction without the help of pandering and RINO Republicans. Every republican should hold many of the conservative principles that MTG stands for (not necessarily all, but most). Not Johnson, McCarthy, Turtle, Cassidy, Collins, Murkowski, Young, and many other republicans that are in bed with the democrats.
It’s OBVIOUS the RATS have blackmail material on Mike Johnson. Get RID of him!
Ignorant statement.
the second the new speaker craps the chair
vote to vacate
go through them one after another till they work for us
make the chair a revolving door
gridlick the entire place
scorch the earth with full auto vacate votes
hobbel them
keep them from doing a damn thing till after the election
unrestricted political barrage
Sharpen that pencil. Her actions insure that list will become longer.
Our side had peace and prosperity less than four years ago.
> She can achieve nothing but calamity for her own party just six months from a general national federal election. <
Yeah, you’re probably right. But here’s the thing. Progressives play hardball, always. They come out swinging. Most Republicans prefer to hold their fire, and wait for a better time. And that better time never comes.
It’s like watching a football game where your team is always on defense.
vote to vacate as often as joe craps his pants
“The pair proposed four accountability measures to ensure the Speaker would not advance an agenda opposed by a majority of Republicans”
No Democrat Speaker would dare put a bill on the floor which is not supported by a majority of his caucus.
However, for Republicans it’s becoming the norm.
Never, ever share a foxhole with a Republican.
Sharp plan.
I wonder why Pres Trump didn’t go scorched earth 6 months before the election? He must be lesser informed?
It’s a real head scratcher.

Greene and Massie haven’t presented an alternative Republican Speaker, which is typical from these two posers.
While she may be tactically right, this is a strategic blunder of a large degree.
They are the progressives, we are the reactionaries.
This particular reaction in the face of Pres Trump
s reaction is insulting at the least.
