Elon Musk says X, formerly Twitter, will reinstate the suspended account of Nick Fuentes, a white supremacist and Holocaust-denying broadcaster.
Why it matters: Musk's announcement comes as the nation experiences a surge in antisemitism incidents and months after his social media company lost a slew of advertisers following his decision to back an antisemitic post.
The decision also came hours after Holocaust survivors launched a new campaign targeting antisemitism and disinformation online.
Fuentes' X account was still suspended as of Friday morning.
Driving the news: Musk said Thursday that he would lift the ban on Fuentes after a Fuentes supporter demanded that the white nationalist be allowed to return to X.
"Very well, he will be reinstated, provided he does not violate the law, and let him be crushed by the comments and Community Notes," Musk posted on X.
"It is better to have anti whatever out in the open to be rebutted than grow simmering in the darkness." Musk then posted that he couldn't be a defender of free speech and "permanently ban someone who hasn't violated the law."
"This will probably cause us to lose a lot of advertisers and makes me sad, but a principle is a principle."

Freedom of speech = speech you dont like. The media like AXIOS must recall it was the ACLU who defended NAZIs in America.

If someone’s controlling a major platform that deals with free speech, like Musk, you want them to be on the end of the spectrum that has what some would consider to be too much of it rather than the other end.

He said free speech means also defending hateful speech and condemning/rebutting it but not hiding or forbidding it.
People from Spain are considered European not Hispanic.
Fuentes has said he is white and he is a nationalist, but he is not a white nationalist. His favorite music is rap and he is friends with Kanye.

European Spanish can be as white as Germans.
Because most of us of Spanish ancestry happen to be as Caucasian as anyone with ancestors who came to the New World from France or Italy-Latin ancestry. I’m Hispanic, my family/surname name is Spanish and I’m Caucasian-does that make me a white nationalist, whatever that is?
And Hispanics are of mostly of European/Spanish ancestry-most of us also do have Native American DNA in varying amounts-especially if the family has been in the New World a few centuries...

Fuentes is a Spanish name. People of Spanish heritage are European and Caucasian, just as are Italians, Poles, Russian, Ukrainian, Swedes, French, and many more.
