Ukraine’s $61 Billion lifeline is not enough
Reuters ^ | April 29, 2024 | Hugo Dixon

Ukraine last week got a vital $61 billion lifeline from the United States. But it still needs a medium-term funding plan to withstand Russia’s onslaught.

A multi-year funding plan would have several benefits. For a start, it would provide some insurance against U.S. political swings. It would also boost Ukrainian morale and give Western arms manufacturers greater confidence to ramp up production.

Ukraine is straining every sinew to hold the line against Russia, an adversary whose $2 trillion, opens new tab economy was 11 times bigger than its own last year.

How much Kyiv needs in future depends on what sort of war it fights. A defensive campaign would cost less than an attempt to expel Russia from large chunks of land. But given that the Kremlin is ramping up its own military expenditure, Ukraine in future will probably need at least as much every year as the 88 billion euros its allies allocated in 2023.

Western countries may relax now that the U.S. Congress has finally agreed $61 billion in aid. This would be a mistake. Ukraine’s allies need to build on last week’s good news to extend a more ambitious lifeline.

Biden is so damaged domestically the only thing that might save him is a foreign war.
He and money-crazed suck-up Zelensky are no doubt plotting the “war victory statement” as we type.

Folks, it is insane to fund anything there. The EU doesn't even care. Poland does, though.

This could have been handled with a peace treaty giving Russia the original land it had.

Ukraine needed to get its defense in place. It didn't. Did they allow their whole population to own guns, like the US? No. So, if they didn't care to promote simple controls to help get their population on board to fight, we don't have to care, either.

This money is SLUSH MONEY, folks. There is no accountability of any consequence. A lot of the money is literally going to non-defense uses.

Stop further hurting the US by shipping our hard-earned dollars to a terrible, lost cause.

Our inflation rate has gone crazy. The Congress doesn't care, either Republicans or Democrats. The government budget must be radically downsized.

Nothing good is happening. Our debt is growing to senseless levels.

We are corrupting everything we had, and a lot of what we had, could have been a lot better.

This $1 Trillion every 100 days is pushing us into the grave, and we've opened the border to let criminals with fake names and no IDs in to kill and replace us.

Outside the fact that the current Congress can *NOT* bind any FUTURE Congress. Not that the (R)N(C) would DARE rock *that* boat though

"Now they are talking about ramming through an irreversible massive MULTI-YEAR funding plan that would put us on the hook for 10 years. One that Trump somehow could not reverse."

This is where a line should get drawn. Americans should not be tax slaves to this.
Any politician pushing for this should be confronted about making a declaration of war for this to continue (they won't--no rational argument can be made) and should be made an example of come election time.

This nonsense will end when Democrats finally start acting like they would have done if these corporate/foreign "welfare for white people" bills were passed by a GOP-controlled Congress in 2004 and signed into law by George W. Bush.

No more American Tax Dollars for YouCraynee Black Hole.
No accountability for where the money goes.
It is indeed a black hole.

Really???!!

Here’s my shocked face 😑

Anyone, and I mean every single person, who believes that simply giving these billions that they could EVER defeat the Russian Army on their border is purely and completely completely INSANE.

Barring an attack on the scale of 9/11 or worse on the homeland, which is entirely possible, the American public is no mood for a foreign ground war versus a nuclear power in Russia.

After the election, if Biden somehow manages to win, there will be nothing to stop Biden and the rest of Washington.

Over the summer if Russia marches across Ukraine, takes back Odessa and is possibly making a move on Kiev, then all bets are off.

And however the war is resolved they will then push for billions every year to rebuild Ukraine. It will never end.

That is the trouble with the concept of supporting the Ukraine war. It welcomes the camel into the tent and ensnares the USA into yet another quagmire.

"After the election, if Biden somehow manages to win, there will be nothing to stop Biden and the rest of Washington."

A general strike would (and based on the reactions to the Canadian trucker strike, its what they fear most). 'A Bug's Life' (pre woke Pixar) comes to mind.

We have plenty of “newcomers” we could send to the Ukrainian army.

Surprise! Right after approving $61 billion, we are told that it is not nearly enough.

It will never be enough. For the Neo-Cons there can never be enough. Even if they were to subdue the world, they’d still need massive spending to insure “US interests” (which is code for having enough force to crush rebellions.)

Germany wants to restore trade relations with Russia.

Post-war trade relations, are on the table(s).

Germany wants Ukraine to be dependent upon the U.S.A.

Probably some big financiers would not mind that - seeing post-war Ukraine as a cheap labor pool.

Anyway, there is a lot of things to adjust, and then adjust again, as all parties attempt to get what they want.

While, what remains of Ukraine, is a dependent of . . . not Germany that wants to have good trade relations with Russia.

Something like that.
