New Biden climate rules could shutter remaining American coal plants
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | April 26, 2024 | Lisa Friedman and Coral Davenport

The Biden administration on Thursday placed the final cornerstone of its plan to tackle climate change: a regulation that would force the nation’s coal-fired power plants to virtually eliminate the planet-warming pollution they release into the air or shut down.

The regulation from the Environmental Protection Agency requires coal plants in the United States to reduce 90% of their greenhouse pollution by 2039, one year earlier than the agency had initially proposed. The compressed timeline was welcomed by climate activists but condemned by coal executives who said the new standards would be impossible to meet...

Taken together, the regulations could deliver a death blow in the United States to coal, the fuel that powered the country for much of the last century but has caused global environmental damage. When burned, coal emits more carbon dioxide than any other fuel source.

The new rules regarding power plants come weeks after the administration’s other major climate regulations to limit emissions from cars and large trucks in a way that is designed to speed the adoption of electric vehicles. Transportation and electric power are the two largest sources in the United States of the carbon pollution that is driving climate change.

Their EV mandate will be extended and extended they haven’t realized EVs are the disposable razors of transport throwaway cars and force families to be 2 or 3 car families , EV for around town and ICE for long traveling if we are allowed to travel

Well Joe is in the pocket of China. Seems like their investment is paying handsomely.

Meanwhile China and India bring a new coal fired plant online pretty well weekly telling the U.S. thanks for saving the coal for us as their much dirtier coal plants send their emissions eastward to the U.S.

The ridiculous reduction numbers they keep giving are ridiculous

And the plan to replace them is both much more expensive and much more unreliable than coal.

Meanwhile, China is building coal plants at a record pace.

Coal is American greatest resource!
US is a Saudi Arabia of coal, we have more coal than the rest of the world combined.
The crowd which hates American success is the crows behind banning coal.

What is wrong with releasing life giving substance?!

The democrat triumph over the tobacco companies in the 1990s showed a lot of industrial insiders which way the wind was blowing. Relentless democrat attacks claiming “the science” behind them and milquesop republican defenders have proven to be the blueprint used since. Industries have mostly tried to mitigate or delay ruinous policies since, but time is quickly running out.

"CO2 plays various roles in the human body including regulation of blood pH, respiratory drive, and affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen (O2)."

A gas essential for human life!

What you described is not at all surprising.

As a nation, we cannot afford to lose these industries — it’s not the type of thing that can simply be switched back on.

Yes, China loves this. It’s more cheap coal available for them.

“What you described is not at all surprising.”

I guess I was still wet-behind-the-ears in my 40s. I honestly expected the execs to stand up against them and begin telling customers how important the industry is, how it provides untold benefits to people, and what would happen if we lost it. But nary a squeak was ever heard. Crickets. It was appalling. All these highly-paid industry hotshots couldn’t muster any defense of the power industry. And the greeniacs were never sated. As soon as you gave them an inch, they were back for a mile. Nothing could satisfy them short of the destruction of the industry.

They will find out in the next decade or two how short sighted their “activism” was. Of course, by then, few will be alive who remember how the USA was when everything worked.

Corporate executives used to be very conservative. However, they now have totally capitulated to the radical left and have gone full woke. DEI, ESG, Affirmative Action--they embrace all of it now.

It's an amazing fundamental transformation!

“When burned, coal emits more carbon dioxide than any other fuel source”........I am yet to be convinced that CO2 is anything but plant food. It imposes no danger at any normal levels. The more that Biden champions solar & wind, the sooner we will all realize they are totally inadequate in terms of power production. Being short of electricity in the dead of winter or the heat of summer is no joke for any of us, but that’s what we are being led to...among the other attending problems caused by widespread use of “green power”.

Coal is 45-85% carbon, depending on the source.

Methane is 75% carbon everywhere you get it.

These people are morons.

“...eliminate the planet-warming pollution...”

Note how this stated as a fact by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Pollution warming the planet is true. In the same way you jumping up and and down moves the centroid of the planet. It just isn't the primary driver of anything.
