A one-month-old British boy with a serious heart condition has been airlifted to a hospital in Rome for treatment not available on the NHS.
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, personally intervened to make sure the child could travel to Italy on a specially equipped military aircraft with medical professionals.
It is understood the infant was being treated for a congenital heart condition at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children when his parents, who have not been identified, were told the specialist treatment would not be possible in the UK.
His father, an Italian citizen, decided to appeal directly to Ms Meloni and her government for assistance who then worked closely with the family to allow their travel.
Following the appeal to Ms Meloni for help, events this week moved at lighting speed and by Tuesday the family were in Rome.
The family were preparing to start a legal battle with the hospital and had planned to apply to the High Court on Monday.
However, a long court battle was avoided after a deal was struck whereby the family would be flown to Rome on an aircraft funded by the Italian government.
The child was then promptly discharged and and taken to an airport ten minutes away. A specially modified ambulance with the family onboard was then loaded onto the plane.
After arriving in Rome on Tuesday the baby was treated at the Vatican-funded Bambino Gesu children's hospital where he underwent a double operation.

I hope the operation was successful.
So given that his father was Italian this little guy was probably an Italian citizen as well. Well done Italy!
Praise God and shame on Britain.
So better care was available in Italy than Britain, or did the NHS just decide they didn’t want to spend the money, I wonder.
Per the Italian media, the baby is an Italian citizen.
And in no article anywhere is the baby’s specific congenital condition mentioned.
Or the specific procedure that can’t be done in the UK.
Why do I think something important information had been left out of these stories...
And here we have a different story...

“...Sky News understands his parents are from mixed Italian and Nigerian backgrounds but are UK residents...”
And here we have a but more of the story...
“...The Bambino Gesù hospital, which is controlled by the Vatican...”
Now that last bit might explain a lot, eh...
The Brits let one get away. I wonder how that happened. Perhaps there were large sums of money involved.
Godspeed.
ah. pending civil disobedience if the brits denied him treatment and held him prisoner until he died, like they do in most cases?
I’d argue, based on the lousy reportage, that we don’t know enough about what’s happened and why to cast any blame.
People really ought to wonder why the reportage on this has been so bad.
And who/what purpose is being served by the lousy reportage.
Prayers up for this little boy and his family. The decency of Italians has shown through.
It sounds like you have more freedom to travel on Rikers Island than you do in the UK for medical treatment.
That’s a thing, to be sure. The media can be faulted for many offenses.
That aside, it is still rather curious that the regime so intent on destroying sick children deigned to allow one to be treated outside the country, something it routinely goes to court to prevent.
It’s an anti-pattern, and thus an indication of something unusual.
It was appropriate for Italy to retrieve it’s citizens, and great that the child got the needed surgery courtesy of a voluntary Catholic charity instead of theft from British taxpayers.
Because of what my Tagline says.
Yes, for Italian citizens, it’s 3 generations removed. I’ve got a friend who’s grandparents were born in Italy, so since he’s only 2 generations down, he is dual American/Italian citizen.
His kids are also dual citizens.
However, THEIR kids will not be.
Same with Ireland...parent or grandparent. One of my grandparents was born in Ireland so under Irish law that automatically made my father a citizen at birth...despite having been born here...and it means that I can apply by submitting birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc proving lineage. But I haven’t done so so although I’m eligible I’m not considered a citizen until I submit the papers.
Thank God the UK was not allowed to kill off this child, like they have others. NHS finest!
