A hearing held earlier this week in New York by the Council’s immigration and hospital committees saw black migrants who have arrived in the city airing their grievances about public services they have been provided, including food and accommodation, with one woman even complaining that New Yorkers won’t learn Congolese languages.
The hearing drew over a thousand immigrants, mostly from countries in Africa, and many illegally in the country, with some claiming that they had been promised money, green cards or work visas if they attended.
While only 250 of them were allowed inside, the rest congregated outside in a park protesting.
The hearing was touted in a press release as aimed at African migrants in shelters to “understand how the [Adams] Administration is addressing language access barriers, cultural competency challenges, health needs, and other roadblocks.”
At one point during the hearing, which lasted for over SIX HOURS, the conversation turned to language services offered by the state, with some migrants complaining that Spanish and English speakers are given priority, and African immigrants are unfairly excluded.

“Uh, F the entitled illegal aliens?”
I’m certain you meant an exclamation point (or three) instead of the question mark.
VA te faire voir!
Pudrete!
Or throw rocks at trees trying to knock down dinner.
EXACTLY. My grandparents all came from the old country, and they had to learn English. They did get any special sort of treatment. AND THEY CAME HERE LEGALLY.
When my husband’s great grandparents came here, the kids weren’t allowed to speak Italian. They wanted them to speak English and assimilate.
Practically the only phrase I learned while stationed in Sicily.
Well that and...”dov’è il bagno?”.
When I go to a foreign country, I try to learn the language.
At least they seem to appreciate it.
I don’t demand that they speak my language................
I bet most of them do have some English. It’s become the ‘lingua franca’ of the world, and most educated people have to study it in school to some extent.
I dare them to go to Harlem and say that to the local black folk.
Ditto. My grandparents arrived at Ellis Island in October 1927 from Germany with their three kids ages 7, 5, and 3. That was just nine year after WW I ended. Speaking German in the Bronx wasn’t a good idea or conducive to long and healthy life. They prospered and moved up to Westchester County in less than ten years.
I knew a woman in East Texas whose family came here from Germany in the 1920’s. Her dad would beat her if she spoke German. I met her when she was in her 60’s and she spoke good English but still had a German accent.
I’ve encountered Chinese students who have to do that; they don’t understand one another’s brand of Chinese.
we’re importing “gibsmedats”, as if we didn’t already have enough of them already.
We’ve been giving in to the Spanish language crap for decades. Why not Watusi, etc.?
I understand that the Mandarin and Cantonese dialects of Chinese are about as mutually understandable as English and German.
I SPEAK JIVE DOES THAT COUNT?
I don’t know - I’ve never attempted to learn any Chinese, it seems so daunting.
(At least Korean has an alphabet...)
But why not spend the effort learning a language which has a rich literature or which is helpful to know when traveling?
