Many of the Lahaina wildfire survivors who were placed in temporary housing at hotels are now living in tents on local parks, beaches, and parking lots, eight months after the deadly blaze ..
Locals complained .. that little is being done to help displaced residents find rental homes, while 70% of the town's rental units are operating as Airbnbs for tourists..
Lahaina resident Benny Reinicke, 30, .. it's 'insulting' that FEMA is offering families cash to relocate elsewhere and says the agency should focus on rebuilding homes in the town itself..
It's an incongruous sight.
On one side, there's glorious golden sand and gleaming blue water, with rows of palm trees lining a strip of luxury hotels, complete with tiki bars and silver service restaurants.
But on the edge of Kāʻanapali Beach, a shabby row of tents has sprung up: their occupants largely ignored by the bikini-clad tourists strolling by...
many of those tents are occupied by survivors of the Lahaina wildfire that ripped through the small Maui town last August, claiming at least 101 lives – making it the worst natural disaster in Hawaiian history.
Most of the tent owners lost everything they owned in the blaze, and have ended up living on the beach after being kicked out of the temporary hotel housing they were given in the immediate aftermath of the fire.

Fire victim is Kailani Koa, 64, who works at Kahului airport, has ended up living in a tent in the parking lot of Hanakao'o Park after losing her home and most of her possessions in the blaze.

Kailani says she has begged Lahaina mayor Richard Bissen for help to no avail and called on Hawaii Governor Josh Green to come to the town and witness her plight.

And 61 BILLION DOLLARS goes to UKRAINE...................
Meanwhile, we are paying hotel rooms for illegal aliens.
Have we found the missing kids yet?
Sometimes it works out to be uninsured; sometimes it doesn’t.
It appears some folks on this thread appear to think it should be my job to pay for their decisions. I disagree. They’ve already burned through their FEMA free money from the taxpayers. Maybe they need to seek if Louisiana has any of those Katrina trailers they can send.
How dare our gubmit care about US citizens when they’ve got to take care of Gaza Jew haters, corrupt Ukraine, and our illegal aliens. The very idea.
Hey comeon now- Hawaiians got a whopping $7000 for their woes- what more can be done? /s
They voted for it. Now they are getting it good and hard.
Nobody had homeowners insurance?
Let’s go Brandon!
Let’s go Democrats!
Good campaign issue wouldn’t you say? Only if the republicans run with it.
Accuse billionaires of moving in. Hawaii for the Hawaiians.
And I'm sure insurance was too steep for them to pay.
Pubbies are slick....and greedy.
bttt
Providing housing for its citizens is not the role of government.
They brought it on themselves.
Most of these people will be lining up to vote to re-elect Biden.
They need to self-identify as illegals.... ooops... er “migrants” or maybe “new comers”.
Then they’ll be treated like royalty and given everything they want.
Neither is paying for housing for illegals, but that's not stopping them.
