My Country Knows What Happens When You Do a Deal With Russia {Moldova / Transdniester}
New York Times ^ | 23rd April 2024 | Paula Erizanu

Posted on 04/23/2024 2:23:15 AM PDT by Cronos

More and more people, including Pope Francis, are asking Ukraine to drop its defense and sit at the negotiation table with Russia. Citing the stalemate on the battlefield and Russia’s superior resources, they urge Ukraine’s leadership to consider a deal. What exactly that would involve is largely left unsaid. But it would clearly involve freezing the conflict, resigning Ukraine’s occupied territory to Russia in exchange for an end to the fighting.

My country, Moldova, knows all about that kind of bargain. A small western neighbor of Ukraine, Moldova experienced Russia’s first post-Soviet war of aggression, which ended with a cease-fire agreement in 1992. Thirty-two years later, 1,500 Russian troops are still stationed on internationally recognized Moldovan territory, despite the Kremlin’s formal agreement to withdraw them in 1994 and then once again in 1999. The case shows that Russia simply cannot be trusted.

But there’s a bigger problem for Ukraine than Russian untrustworthiness. It’s that freezing a conflict, without a full peace deal, simply does not work. For three decades, it has fractured Moldova, hindered national development and given Russia continued opportunities to meddle with Moldovan life. A frozen conflict, we should remember, is still a conflict. Anyone calling for Ukraine to settle for one should heed Moldova’s cautionary tale.

...the starkest division is in education. Above Transnistrian schools, the Russian and Transnistrian — but not Moldovan — flags are mounted. There, as well as in the press, Romanian is written in Cyrillic rather than Latin script, just as it was in the Soviet Union. In history classes, pupils learn that ethnic Romanians on the right bank of the Dniester are fascists who want to kill them.

‘but you took the time to read and reply’

I suppose that is supposed to be some kind of put down?

Russia might be able to toss a million tons of high explosive force against Ukrainian forces each year - about 50 Hiroshima bombs worth of explosive force.

Is that a likely / plausible scenario?

If no: Then we can reasonably dismiss it.

If yes: Then you agree that Putin is a dangerous war-mongering land-grabbing autocrat who is likely (after Ukraine's annexation) to turn his attention to the next victim on his list.

I was in the State Department. The US lied to Russia over and over since 1991. You need to get your head out of your fouth point of contact, and quit your collective Western snobery. You don’t know jack. You blindlessly drool over Obama’s and then Biden’s DNC-CIA/MSM BS narrative. Having spent 38 years in the service of the DOD, EPA, VA, and State Department I am sure you are simply simple minded. Those who support Ukraine are useful idiots, period, full stop.

In about a year or two, you need to come back with your hat in hand and appologize for your igornance. Zero chance of Russia taking more land from Ukraine?

Russia is going impose a solution that is beyond the capacity of the White House of fools and wokesters ability to comprehend. Chicago politics might play to a domestic audience, but on the World Stage the Chicago Wing of the DNC are mere pikers compared to actual politics.

This branch of the DNC has tried to impose it’s will and corruption upon on Russia since 2008/09. Emboldened in 2012 with Obama’s re-election in hand they overthrew the legally elected government of Ukraine. Then those installed sold all Ukraine’s wealth and assets for pennies on the dollar. Blackrock is 300B underwater with no prospect of getting a return.

This war with Russia was always about extending America’s political will and financial reach, but alas they fooled themselves with Martial Law in Ukraine - Zelenski is a lame duck and after 21 May 24 he will be a dictator and those 60 American Advisors are mostly a security detail to prevent assassination; Zelenski (MARK MY WORDS) will not be spending much time in Ukraine after 20 May.... My money is on a missile strike taking him out.

After 21 May, those fighting Ukraine say by international law that they have no one in Ukraine with which to hold any negotiations.

Happy now, Alberta's Child?

You think AC is Canadian?

(Even if this were true, it wouldn't do anything to invalidate AC's points regarding NATO, because Canada happens to be a founding and ongoing member of NATO...unless you believe only Americans are allowed to make arguments regarding NATO?)

The U.S. invocation of Article 5 after 9/11 should have been seen as a comical farce.

A bunch of foreigners (mostly Saudis) enter the U.S. on legal visas, get trained to fly in U.S. flight schools, and then hijack four airliners and crash them into buildings. And that somehow obligated other NATO countries to help the U.S. invade Afghanistan — and occupy it for 20 years?

I don't recall having attempted to invalidate any of Alberta's Child's arguments on the basis of his/her nationality. I don't think that I even touched upon the topic of nationality at all.

Ad hominems really aren't my style.

But thank you for your lecturing me about Canada's status vis-à-vis NATO.

The fact that the West is failing from the inside out actually makes it more dangerous.

The Globalist elites and Russia haters know the West is finished as the dominant global power, and they may want to strike and try to destroy Russia before the West collapses completely.

Says the guy who highlighted his username in red as though it was worth emphasizing.

If you weren’t trying to comment on it, then why point it out? Why highlight it in red?

You are falsely assuming that there is anything special about my highlighting (and boldfacing) the names of another FReeper whom I reference in my post. In fact, it is my standard practice; I do it as a courtesy.

Yet another indication that you are grasping at straws, Ultra Sonic 007, if that is the best you have.

What's next? I'm a bigot because I use different font faces?!

A cursory review of your older posts does seem to show this highlighting as an apparently unique habit of yours.

I retract my prior criticism accordingly.
