5 shot in Maryland park during ‘senior skip day’ gathering: ‘It’s maddening’

GREENBELT, Md. (WDCW) – Five teens were injured in a shooting in Greenbelt, Maryland, during “senior skip day” festivities for local high school students, police said.

Three of the victims had serious injuries and the two others were critically hurt, fire officials said. One remained in critical condition as of Saturday.

The victims were all between the ages of 16 and 18.

I have never understood the reasoning behind “Ditch Day”.

How does this improve or enhance the learning experience?

What productive purpose does it serve?

How does it help the students, the community, the parents, or the teachers?

Perhaps, a LONG time ago it may have been a fun little lark, but like many vestiges of times gone bye it serves NO purpose and has become yet another drain on those it once benefitted.

Hard to believe it took four writers to pen this, the way it is written all of the victims were 17 years old. But no matter as we’ll be a non-English speaking country in a few years anyway.

I started HS in NC, and Seniors did not skip, the school I attended allowed seniors to be exempt from finals if they had perfect attendance. So no senior ever missed a day unless they had no choice.

Then I moved to PA in my sophomore year and was exposed to the entire concept of Sr Skip Day, which made me realize the precious HS was run by far smarter people than the one I transferred into.

Maryland is one of the darkest states in the US at 1/3. Only Louisiana and Mississippi are darker.

I grew up in Greenbelt in the 70s and 80s. Greenbelt was great then. Now I wouldn’t step foot in Greenbelt or MD for that matter. Ever.
