Earth's changing spin is threatening to toy with our sense of time, clocks and computerized society in an unprecedented way — but only for a second.

For the first time in history, world timekeepers may have to consider subtracting a second from our clocks in a few years because the planet is rotating a tad faster than it used to. Clocks may have to skip a second — called a "negative leap second" — around 2029, a study in the journal Nature said Wednesday.

Talk about solid bull feces! Approx. 5 articles below THIS one on THIS page, an article states that the earth is beginning to slow down, due to melting polar ice. Global warming, dont-cha-know! Fortunately, my schedule is not tight enough to be affected, whichever one is correct. I’d hazard a wager that they are BOTH blatant lies!

Isn't it interesting that NEVER do these articles say "send more money" or "don't send more money." The latter is NEVER an alternative. There's a "scientific" observation with plenty of proof.

The universal constant is not G but always is "Gee, send more money."

This plot depicts the difference between mean solar time, measured by the earth's rotation, and 24 hours of "atomic time", measured by a cesium clock. Positive values indicate that the earth takes more than 24 hours to complete one rotation, negative values indicate that the earth completes one rotation in less than 24 hours. The total drift between atomic time and mean solar time in an interval is the area under the red curve in that interval. Notice that the red curve is mostly positive, but has recently gone into negative territory.

If the excess length of day averaged 0.002 seconds for a year, atomic clocks would be 0.002 x 365 = 0.073 seconds ahead of the earth. At a rate of 0.002 seconds a day, a leap second would have to be added to once every 500 days, or about twice in two years, close to the 27 leap seconds in the interval 1972-2023.

Civil time is ultimately based on mean solar time, determined so that the sun transits the Greenwich (Prime) Meridian at 12:00, on average. Astronomers and navigators want a time scale that is tied to the rotation of the earth, hence the effort to keep civil time in step with earth's rotation. Astronomers also want a time scale that is independent varying rotation of the earth, and have devised a uniform time scale, Dynamical Time, abbreviated TD, that does not incorporate leap seconds, and advances uniformly (as measured by an atomic clock) to calculate the future positions of planets and the moon. Atomic time was calibrated to match the average rotational period of the earth between around 1700 through 1900, for historical reasons.
