Gov. Ron DeSantis signs legislation hiking criminal penalties for retail thieves and "porch pirates"
"We're not gonna put up with that [...] Your package is gonna be there, and if it's not, someone is gonna have hell to pay."
"We will raise penalties [...] They are going to be deterred."
"We are gonna hold people accountable."
RE: It’s now a felony in Florida to steal porch packages worth over $40.
It should be a felony to STEAL period. Why put a price tag on anything ( and how would a thief know how much a package is worth )?
Amazon and UPS, at times, have contractors delivering in their personal vehicles as well.
How long would it be until someone kills the delivery guy?
Good start.
Now pass a law permitting deadly force against someone on your property committing a felony.
That means you can legally shoot porch bandits in Floriduh!!
Why $40? The thief doesn’t know how much the package is worth at the time, so the crime is the same. I also have a problem with the “attempted murder” charge...I mean, just because the suspect was unsuccessful they get a lesser charge?? The intention of murder was the same.
I don’t know how you could mistake someone dropping a package off for someone stealing one. But I suppose you have a point. I was a little tongue in cheek, I confess.
Second guy/company that day….wrong house…
I think stiff penalties will make a difference.
I assumed it was mostly tongue in cheek.
People are becoming, rightfully, real angry at society.
I think it’s the desire of the government.
Anarcho-tyranny.
You don’t see this in Japan because they have higher social cohesiveness so very few crimes of any kind are committed. People who do commit crimes are aggressively prosecuted (and Japanese trials are not exactly fair for defendants) but I think that’s secondary to the fact that Japan’s society is overall extremely cohesive.
What I would like to know is why is $40.00 dollars the threshold? Why isn’t $0 dollars the threshold? It’s all theft.
Great idea, but Florida will need to recruit a lot more police officers to cover the new cases this creates.
Agreed. I definitely followed him very closely, especially when Covid first hit. He’s done almost all of the right things. Sure, we have some differences in opinion on certain issues, but from an outsiders perspective who lives in a communist blue state he has done amazing.
What should’ve been a routine trip in December 2020 to visit family in Florida was one of the most amazing vacations in recent memory. For the most part, outside the airport and a larger big box stores, almost everything was normal. The restaurants, smaller, mom and pop stores, etc. For the most part were acting like Covid didn’t even exist.
Bad here in Southern California!!....
Be sure to order at least $40. worth when ordering. Let’s get RID of these crooks!!!
good point
What’s to keep a crook from hoping into the truck and driving away while the delivery guy on your sidewalk?
Nothing really. Guys usually leave the vehicle running, or at least have the keys in the ignition.
Our society is becoming a low trust society.
So; instead of a Glitter bomb, it’s a SHITTER bomb!
Cool!
Scale this down for mass consumption —>
