One of Las Vegas’ longest-standing and most historic hotels is shuttering its doors after nearly 67 years to make room for a new Major League Baseball stadium.
Tropicana Las Vegas closed on Tuesday, just shy of its 67th. anniversary.
Demolition is slated for October to make room for a $1.5 billion Major League Baseball stadium.
The hotel, which opened on the iconic Las Vegas strip on April 4, 1957, was nicknamed the “Tiffany of the Strip” for its opulence.
When it was built in the late -1950s, the Tropicana cost $15 million to build. It was three stories with 300 rooms split into two wings, creating a footprint shaped like the letter “Y.”
Later, the Tropicana underwent two major hotel expansions: The Tiffany Tower opened in 1979 with 600 rooms.

They can print unlimited numbers of cardboard fans, though.
I believe all teams are privately owned. Cities only fund the stadiums to bring in revenue for the cities. The question is, is it a plus or minus sum gain.
“I keep hearing that interest in watching baseball is declining, especially with younger people. Does the world really need another stadium, or would this be a project mainly to enrich the builders for a few years?”
Same team, new city.
I am not sure what Fisher paid for the A’s franchise, but it will be worth a lot more after it moves to LV.
Nobody wants to go to see a MLB or NFL game in any of these sh#t hole cities like Oakland. If I was visiting Vegas, I would love to go to a Raiders game. Just like if I was in Dallas, I would go to see a Cowboys or Rangers game.
Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Boston in the summer.
One of main attractions is going to see a game at Fenway Park. Even when the Sox suck.
It’s a money laundry for the DNC.
You're right. But wait and see. I think we may have opened the pandora's box with the legalization of sports gambling.
Look at what happened with Ohtani.
Fans may stop attending games if we find out that all of them are rigged.
TV revenue is the biggest profit in MLB. That is because the MLB owns the rights to the broadcast of the games. Unlike the NFL where the league owns the broadcast rights.
Which is why the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Cubs, Angels, Braves, Astros all have the most money to spend on players. This is because their TV networks bring in huge amounts of revenue. It is really hard for small market teams to compete. Which is why it is great when the Rays win the AL east.
“The owner refused to maintain the stadium in Oakland “
The stadium is owned by the county.
I believe Fisher bought the team for $180 million. Current value is something like $1.5 billion. Move to Vegas likely doubles that immediately.
Yes. It’s too complicated for 21st Century brains and requires a degree of patience to follow a game. Qualities that are not found today in a population of entitled foreign a$$holes who demand instant gratification.
Stayed at The Tropicana once back in the early nineties. It was nice back then but I understand it has declined. Casinos come and go in Vegas - c’est la Vegas vie.
I stayed at The Luxor three years ago, and never again. Not a very nice clientele.
Yet, the game of Golf, seems to be gaining in popularity, so maybe it’s a matter of what ‘seems Cool’ and what seems boring or outdated. So, there may still be a place for more cerebral diversions of subdued gentlemen and wealthy women.
People like Ricky Fowler, Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy are pro level, but also interesting people.
Serena sort of did the same thing for Tennis, before she became locked into her Tantrum Performances. She retired just in time, enough to keep some modicum of credibility.
Will the new stadium be air conditioned?
The city or county may subsidize some of the building cost. The site will occupy 9 acres out of the 35 acre demolished Tropicana site. Suspect new Hotel, casino, restaurant, merchandising, and golf course to be built there. Contract is with ballys and another gambling property group. There is also sports memorabilia, parking, radio revenue, and stadium rental post season, league profit sharing
“The Tropicana is pretty much a dump, anyway”
it was a dump 30 years ago when i stayed there for a convention ... i can’t imagine what it was like when it finally closed for good ...
Bummer. The Hooters hotel was right next door. It was cheap. Next thing you know it becomes the Oyo hotel with the $30 resort fee. Priced me out even though the restaurant stayed. The whole strip is now seedy.
The A’s are the last to leave...
factor this new mega-stadium into the SanFran Giants no longer allow anyone under 17yo in for ball games.
