Democrats' Retirement Problem Is Worse Than Republicans'
Newsweek ^ | 3/29/24 | Andrew Stanton

Posted on 03/31/2024 5:49:04 AM PDT by cotton1706

A higher number of Democrats than Republicans are leaving the House of Representatives after November's elections.

All members of Congress are up for reelection in November, when President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off in a historic presidential race. But several members of Congress have opted to not run for reelection this year after a tumultuous Congress defined by leadership battles and few bills becoming law.

In total, 25 Democratic members of Congress have announced they are not seeking reelection in the House, the latest being Representative Annie Kuster of New Hampshire. Many plan to run for other offices. On the Republican side, 20 representatives have said they are not seeking reelection.

Retirement may be a greater problem for Democrats, as six are vacating districts Biden won by fewer than 10 points in 2020. Three others from North Carolina announced their exits after redistricting made their seats much more conservative.

Incumbent members of Congress are typically seen as having an advantage over new candidates. Several Democrats vacating competitive seats, such as Kuster or Michigan Representative Elissa Slotkin, have historically outrun Democratic presidential candidates.

Meanwhile, no Republicans representing competitive districts have announced plans to retire.

Republicans hold a narrow majority of Congress, with 218 seats compared to Democrats' 213. There are four vacancies. Both parties are vying for control of Congress next year, with experts viewing control of the House as a tossup that runs through a handful of districts roughly evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans.

“All members of Congress are up for reelection in November,….”
————-
No, all members of the House of Representatives are up for election in November. Only 1/3 of the Senate is, just like every other election since 1790. I can’t express how annoying it is to me how the House of Representatives is conflated with “Congress“ on a continual basis. It shows the utter ignorance of whomever it is that it’s writing the article and their editors.

Retirement will do the Demonicrat representatives no good. There is no statute of limitations on their past acts of treason.

Amazing -- Newsweek gets something right!

I've been pointing out for months that all of the simpering pearl-clutchers who believe "Oh noes, itz 2018 uhgenn!!!" because of all the Republican retirements couldn't be further off the mark.

Because they don't have a clue as to who (i.e., which party) the likely replacements are for all of the retirees. In damn near every case aside from the inevitable loss in NY-3, the GOP is either favored or STRONGLY favored to hold the districts of the departing representatives. But it's easier to reflexively panic than it is to calmly look at the facts.

Furthermore there are numerous pickup opportunities among the districts which Democrats are abandoning, and not just the slam-dunks in North Carolina either.

Despite all that, OF COURSE the GOP may still lose the House in November. But if they do, it will be due to losses they suffer in districts where the Republican incumbent IS running; not because of districts where they aren't.

Pearl-clutchers, read this and relax:

Another One Bites the Dust.... But This is 2024, Not 2018

As long as the GOP behaves like normal, I don’t think it even matters. Hard to say Speaker Jeffries would be any different from Speaker Johnson.

"Democrats' Retirement Problem Is Worse Than Republicans'"

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Republicans will hopefully win the House. The problem is that Democrats are undoubtedly planning to blame their unconstitutional, unaccountable Biden era spending and debt on the Republicans in front of 2026 midterm elections.

On the other hand, I think hopeful Trump 47, supported by the new Congress that Democratic and Republican patriots give him, will finish draining the swamp.

We may see a lot of screaming into the air again this November.

I think Trump is on his way to winning (they can try all their tricks again but all of them won’t take).

Republicans are most definitely taking the Senate (they have 49 senators not up for reelection, will not have any losses - Texas and Florida are the only maybe-losses but Cruz and Scott will be reelected- and will take the WV seat easily with Manchin retiring, any others are gravy: AZ, PA, OH, MI, WI, NV).

If we keep the House, we’ll have a Trump Trifecta again...WITHOUT Paul Ryan and John McCain and lots of others gone.

Sorry, wrong info. Republicans have 49 senators total, those not up for reelection and we won’t lose any existing seats.

So that’s the starting point.

Manchin’s +1 equals 50, and any more are gravy.

Some interesting notes on races in NH where Annie Kuster is retiring.

The Green Pages listed her replacement suitors as:
https://www.thegreenpapers.com/G24/NH

Democratic Member of Congress Ann McLane “Annie” Kuster - apparently not a candidate
• 27 March 2024: “... I will not be seeking re-election in 2024 ....” • FEC H0NH02181; 31 Dec 23; Tot $1,550,266; Dsb $684,666

Candidate list (7) - 119th Congress
Democratic former Executive Councilor Kevin Colin “Colin” Van Ostern • FEC H4NH02332
Colin Van Ostern is running for Congress in New Hampshire’s 2nd District because the only way to fix what’s broken in our country today is to make it work for everyday people and middle class families again. Instead of letting fringe extremists or powerful interests rig the system for themselves, we need to put people first. That starts with protecting reproductive rights – from IVF and birth control to abortion access – no matter your zip code and cutting household costs like housing, higher ed, healthcare and childcare.

Republican Mark Joseph Kilbane • FEC H2NH01296
Finance company owner, former Army Captain. Exploratory Committee stage
https://www.kilbanewins.com/

Republican Robin Ng • FEC H4NH02316
LinkedIn page: Customer Service Manager at Upper Valley Ride to the Airport (cannot find any other information on him/her — found several pictures of Robin Ngs, all were men in foreign countries and obviously not the candidate)

Republican Jason Daniel Riddle • FEC H2NH02252
He’s tan, rested, and ready after serving jail time for his role in the Jan. 6 riots. Now Granite Stater Jason Riddle is planning another run for Congress.

Riddle, a Cheshire County Republican, plans to challenge Second Congressional District Rep. Annie Kuster (D-Hopkinton) in 2024. He tried to run in 2022 but couldn’t get his campaign off the ground. He blames a lack of support from the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s Office and Republicans for his failure to launch — not to mention the fact that he was behind bars.

. . .

Now that he is a free man again, Riddle is gearing up for another run. Though he is currently not allowed to leave New Hampshire as part of his probation — including travel to Washington, D.C. — he is sure he will be able to serve if elected.

Republican Paul Michael Wagner • FEC H4NH02324

Republican Lily Tang Williams • FEC H2NH02260; 31 Dec 23; Tot $119,036; Dsb $6,003

"Manchin’s +1 equals 50, and any more are gravy."

There's no chance Scott loses in Florida, and while Cruz' re-election is certainly not automatic it would be a big surprise if he should lose.

So yes, 50-50 is the likeliest outcome as things stand at the moment, with the (hopefully) Republican VP breaking ties.

However do not wave off the probability of Lisa Murkowski becoming Judas Jim Jeffords 2.0 (and maybe taking desiccated old Susan Collins with her) if GOP control of the Senate would be affected by such a move.

Collins is never going to run again, and Murkowski is never going to win again even if she does choose to face the voters of Alaska one more time -- as long as the state repeals Rigged Choice Voting which was implemented in 2022 just in the nick of time to save her saggy ass.

That cow will absolutely never survive a real Republican primary if she runs in 2028, nor will she be able to finagle another win as an "independent" a la 2010. She's toast, but can still do considerable damage from now through '28.

And she will, either from inside the GOP or outside it.

D+2 district, winnable though not a *likely* win this year even without an incumbent.

Williams is the most serious candidate for the GOP at the present time, but is going to need vastly greater resources to overcome the leftward lean of the district and the fact that the ultra-liberal Democrat is going to raise & spend a fortune in NH-2.

On a separate note, the governorship of NH is up every two years and Chris Sununu has decided to not seek re-election. Vermont is the only other state that still has two year terms for governor. Both Republicans Chris Sununu and Phil Scott were first elected in 2016. Phil Scott is running for re-election in Vermont.

The following have announced they are running

Democratic Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig
Former democrat mayor from 2018 to Jan 2024. Predecessors and successor were/are Republicans. Her campaign page provides no other credentials, nor are there any issues discussed
https://joycecraig.org/

Democratic Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington
As the only Democrat on the Executive Council, Cinde has been the last line of defense against Republican overreach and extremism. (The Executive Council of the State of New Hampshire (commonly known as the Governor’s Council is the executive body of the U.S. state of New Hampshire. The Executive Council advises the Governor on all matters and provides a check on the governor’s power.) A health care attorney, Cinde began her law practice at the law firm of Shaheen & Gordon P.A. (Senstor Shaheen’s husband’s law firm.)

Republican former U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte • First elected: 2010; unsuccessful candidate for re-election: 2016.
Kelly Ann Ayotte (/ˈeɪɒt/ AY-ott;[2] born June 27, 1968) is an American attorney and politician who served as a United States senator from New Hampshire from 2011 to 2017. A member of the Republican Party, Ayotte served as New Hampshire Attorney General from 2004 to 2009.

Republican former state Senator Chuck Morse
Charles W. Morse (born October 11, 1960) is an American politician who served as president of the New Hampshire Senate and was acting governor of New Hampshire in 2017. Morse represented New Hampshire’s 22nd State Senate district from 2010 to 2022, having previously held the same office from 2002 to 2006.

In 2022, Morse was a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Hampshire, placing second in the primary behind Donald Bolduc.
